A friend has Covid right now. They have lost their sense of smell and they're having cognitive problems. This hit me today, as it often does: we made, and continue to make, a huge collective mistake in allowing a virus that impacts the brain to transmit unmitigated globally.

Let me pick one point. Winston scoffs at the idea of NZ being a partnership between Crown and Maori in the 19th C. But in the really world, NZ's 1856 Constitution - drafted in London - provides for Maori legal districts where tikanga governs, as well as standard provinces. Ie partnership. s 71.

Unpopular opinion, but paying more tax so we actually have the state capacity to keep kids alive might be a worthwhile trade-off. www.rnz.co.nz/news/health/...
She said workload was also an issue, with the social worker concerned dealing with 42 clients when "the ideal was no more than 17".

The supervisor pushed back on previous witnesses assertions that Oranga Tamariki didn't act quickly enough in the girl's case.

"I consider that incorrect. We actually did give it urgency. We gave it more urgency than even our own contact centre believed we should."

Asked by McKenzie if the agency had done anything wrong up until the time the child died, the supervisor said she didn't believe so.

"I think everybody did everything they could with what they had at the time, and so from Oranga Tamariki's perspective, every practice guidance that we had at the time, and every policy that we had at the time, was met."

Counsel assisting the inquest Rebekah Jordan had earlier asked the supervisor about the 12-year-old's well-being and suicide risk assessment.

"Doing the basics right" continues. Get sick staff to infect others. Brilliant. www.rnz.co.nz/news/indonz_...
"Recently, staff working in the Middlemore emergency department are being asked to come into work sick.

"This endangers the safety and wellbeing of both staff and the patients we see and is a disturbing consequence of the chronic short staffing we have been expected to work through. This increase in risk was predictable and completely avoidable."

The workers say the emergency department regularly operates over capacity, at times reaching about 400 patient representations when its capacity is 150.

"This winter, Middlemore emergency department has routinely operated at 200 percent over capacity, peaking closer to 250 percent over capacity at times," the letter says.

Diabetes. Long COVID. Cancer. There will always be a way poor people “could have handled that better.” My point is this: you don’t know. Maybe there was. Maybe there truly wasn’t. The truth is very likely somewhere in between. None of that changes obligation to people who are suffering now.
