We went hiking in the snow yesterday, hoping (always) to find ravens. It was only back in the fog-filled parking lot that these two landed beside me. I know this couple, having recorded their special duet before. #ravens #birds 🪶

Quick drawing of something I really enjoy.
Me coming home and greeting Brioche (a cat sleeping on a rolly cart) by saying "Brioche I'm home!"
He sits up and you can see the left side of his soft round head is concave from where it's been squished against a pillow for several hours.

Tremendous turnout and energy at the Democratize Yale protest on Friday! Huge high five to hundreds of students, faculty, workers, and alums who are fighting for academic freedom and freedom of speech while telling President McInnis and the trustees NOT TO CUT A DEAL WITH TRUMP!
Yale students smile and clap at a Democratize Yale demonstration - one holds a sign reading "TRUSTEES: LISTEN. RESIST. DEMOCRATIZE."

Announcing a new, occasional journal - PALE GREY IDOL. I hope you'll come along with us on this new venture. Info: palegreyidol.ca
Cover for PALE GREY IDOL. Featuring black background with maori art of a tribal mask. Yelloe and grey font colors.

Hello Undertow Family,

It's my great pleasure today to announce publication of a new journal — Pale Grey Idol.

Pale Grey Idol will be an occasional offering. The impetus behind it is to give a home to stories that don't quite fit the needs or aesthetic of Weird Horror magazine.

Some of you may recall the first journal I edited, Shadows & Tall Trees. Pale Grey Idol is very much cast in that mold. A slim journal styled after those first issues of Shadows & Tall Trees, presenting curious tales of the ineffable. Back to our roots, as it were.

An aspect of this new venture that might sadden some of you is that I am not fulfilling direct orders for the journal. I'm sorry about this but hope you'll understand and still support Pale Grey Idol.

Our most precious commodity is time. And these days life is eating away at it in unpleasant ways. I've crunched some numbers, and compared fulfilling orders through our Undertow site with sales through distribution channels. There is a modest amount more that comes in via direct sales, but when I factor in the actual time it takes to fulfill orders, well, that negates that bump. In addition, there have been a number of things that have made fulfillment of both print and eBooks...challenging and vexing.

So I've set up a dedicated website for Pale Grey Idol:

PALE GREY IDOL

There you'll find information about forthcoming issues, submissions guidelines, where to buy* the issues, the newsletter sign-up, and contact information.

I am very excited about this new venture, and I do hope that you will support it if you are able.

PURCHASE

NOTE - It appears the print edition has only propagated to Amazon, thus far. It should be up on Bookshop, and Barnes & Noble soon.

Thank you all for your continued support and good graces.

My main thought with this article is really need AI takes from outside elite liberal arts schools bubble. “Just have in-depth searching conversations w/ your handful of students and then give each 45 min oral exams!” This has no relevance to most professors or students at most schools in the country

yes yes yes also, I would never write with AI. That's not the point, that's not why I write. I don't write so I have a book in my hand I write because I have ideas I want to flesh out, create, explore. The exploration is a huge part of the process. It changes as its written, & that's a good thing

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Despite his best efforts, Trump isn't going to establish a consolidated autocracy before he's gone, thankfully relatively soon. But it matters how much he's repudiated as a disgraceful aberration. Because if not, he's just setting the floor for what the next wannabe dictator can get away with.
