I’ve interviewed a lot of victims of digital harassment. I’ve experienced it firsthand too. One of the hardest parts is that the normal people stay silent. The harassers are gleeful in the violation of your boundaries and no one else is saying anything. It makes it feel like everyone hates you.

I spoke to @usatoday.com about data on sexual violence at Cornell. Victimization rates are increasing and reporting rates are falling. “Together… those two trendlines tell me that all students, including victims and perpetrators, believe that there is impunity for sexual assault at Cornell.”

Researchers find that one-time trainings about consent can actually increase perpetration. In my interviews with young men, they told me that they knew no one believed what they were saying because it hadn’t come up before—and no one actually held men accountable anyway.

Nearly 40% of survivors who report to their schools are pushed out in one way or another—usually, at the urging of school staff who want them to leave. (In comparison, less than 1% of perpetrators are suspended or expelled.)

One of the Cornell students accused of gang rape, Scott Kretzschmar, denies it and says through his attorney that they are going to “confront” the survivor through the court system. I can already tell you that means victim-blaming, DARVO, and smears. She is going to need a lot more of our support.

The connections being drawn between the Cornell 7 and Brock Turner bring up something crucial: The outrage at Turner’s insanely light sentence has ultimately made it impossible for him to blend back into society. Where legal redress failed, community stepped in to make sure no one would forget.

I’ll add to this that a big part of why Biden’s approach failed is because he tapped Title IX administrators to lead the effort, instead of survivors and their advocates. He picked the betrayers instead of the betrayed.

Women are made to feel like conspiracy theorists if we point out that a lot of men quick to defend rapists sound like rapists themselves. But the research is clear: rapists travel in packs. And that means that a lot of the time, the friend of the rapist is also a rapist.
