Software engineering could and should be done with the same care as any other type of engineering. This is a post in honor of Margaret Hamilton (and also a subtweet of all vibe-coders everywhere).
Screencap

"“I fought to bring the software legitimacy so that it — and those building it — would be given its due respect, and thus I began to use the term ‘software engineering’ to distinguish it from hardware and other kinds of engineering, yet treat each type of engineering as part of the overall systems engineering process,” Hamilton told El Pais in 2018. “When I first started using this phrase, it was considered to be quite amusing. It was an ongoing joke for a long time. They liked to kid me about my radical ideas. Software eventually and necessarily gained the same respect as any other discipline.”"

Maturity is resisting the urge for a gotcha about the comments regarding Barnes and Wright, and recognising that instead she’s said something that is necessary to be said, and this is a first step to recalibrating the conversation away from ethno-nationalism.

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

Ballpoint pen and colored pencil.

At the top of the piece we see the delicately drawn branches and leaves of an apple tree. Just beneath the tree limbs, a bat is flying with one of the green apples in its mouth. This is when the morphing begins, reader. A sequence of 13 drawings show the bat morphing into a teeny witch (with completion of the morph around drawing #9). The morphing creates a spiral leading us to the center of the page where the little witch is running towards her basket filled with apples. It’s likely she’ll re-morph into a bat again and the morphing pattern will continue.

What does it mean to be a member-led party when the Greens have 230,000 members but only 1835 voted on the Zionism Is Racism motion? Doesn't seem like you can claim the result as the iron-clad democratic will of the membership while dismissing the concerns of actual democratically elected MPs

Two panel comic. Panel 1: a bat hangs upside-down from a telephone line at sunset. The bat is in front of a billboard advertising the Florida Mega Jackpot, which is valued at $5,318,008 - represented with a digital ticker. Panel 2: the POV flips to the bat’s upside-down perspective, which makes the digital numbers look like they spell “BOOBIES”. The bat appears delighted.

One of my favorite cases of someone being Wrong on the Internet was a very earnest, very confused vegan who was telling people how cruel honey is; and it eventually turned out they thought honey was made by putting bees in a centrifuge and spinning them around until they threw up.

Lots of talk of growth ahead of the Budget, as if it were a baroque puzzle. Our problem is basic. It's that we no longer support the things which facilitate growth: Europe, immigration, higher education, tax simplification, policy stability. These are all choices and could stop making them anytime.

Corporate America also benefited hugely from US State spending in science and academia. The US reputation benefited hugely by being "less worse" than other Empires, and being on the "right" side of WW2.

The damage done by Trump is enormous, and will take decades to fix. But it isn't a "black swan event". It is the logical conclusion of poor, corrupt and venal governance by one party and inept weak governance by the other.

Until recently other countries could rely on corporate America to be relatively sensible, but now (under Trump 2.0) even they have been shown to be deeply unreliable.

Progress made when dealing with a Democrat administration is usually reversed by a Republican administration. Any deal made with the US is only worth the term of a Democrat administration, and a deal made with Trump won't last his next brain fart.

Sure, it is way worse under Trump. But Reagan was like this (e.g. Iran Contra), and Bush Jnr ("freedom fries", Abu Ghraib, Iraq). And there is a general unwillingness to deal with the problems, instead they are bushed under the carpet and politely ignored.
