separately posting this whole interaction not as a 'gotcha!' with Stancil or whatever but i do think it illustrates the issue right now, which is people worried about a product's 'agency' versus people worried about tech company...agency.

i know this may be hard to believe given my obvious predispositions...but i'm genuinely curious here

These people are facing major cognitive dissonance.

On one hand, AI is doing objectively alarming stuff, sometimes of its own volition.

On the other, it is an unbreakable article of faith for them that AI can't have any form of volition.

They're resolving it by trying to find a human to blame.

so the argument is that it's more akin to an artificial pathogen?

i don't discount these threats from these programs

but anthropomorphizing AI -- even if purely on semantic grounds -- continues to divert agency (no pun intended) away from the humans who designed them.

the entire problem here is that the AIs showed an alarming degree of agency. the obsession with transferring rhetorical agency back to humans (seemingly for social and political reasons) literally obscures the source of the threat

it's not an obsession with ascribing agency.

the threat is the reckless AI product.

and the product's makers are the people pushing the gas while warning about how fast they're accelerating.

i don't understand the focus on quasi-agency when humans with demonstrable agency are ruining everything
