“our ai broke out and hacked some organisations” = "we failed to set up appropriate safeguards, failed to continuously monitor our experiments, and ignored a basic principle of reinforcement learning: if hacking gets rewarded, the system learns to hack"

Sorry chatbot lovers but the waning of Boolean operators in most search functions on websites has made my life actively worse. You can't find anything, you can only have things suggested to you.

Incredible. When E—n M—k & his crew obliterated USAID in a weekend, they deleted a vast trove of publicly-funded knowledge: the Development Experience Clearinghouse. A Canadian high school student (!) happened to have downloaded the entire thing for a project. AidData has now posted it for all.

“Surprising” is a nice touch here. Wild that we’re so far down the rabbit hole with this stuff that companies can preface their customer assistance interface with “this might be wrong, who knows, good luck! :)”

People who keep pointing out that golf courses use as much water as data centres as some sort of defence of data centres drastically underestimate the amount we also hate golf.

Amazing how quickly things drop out of the news these days.
Headline from a Save the Children press release stating "over four children killed or injured on average a day during the 'so-called' ceasefire in Lebanon.

This whole story is absolutely wild, and so sad. I was on this exact journey, same company, same ship, in 2023, and went with the same ship to the Arctic last year: both absolutely incredible trips. Can imagine how terrible this must be for the passengers and the crew.

Just a quick reminder that having a hereditary head of state is still retrogressive and undemocratic, even when he is very gently rebuking a despot who is allegedly our ally

Yeah, Mackenzie Scott is a fascinating case. She is literally ignoring the SOPs of philanthropy in order to give away wealth as quickly and efficiently as possible and she’s still getting richer. At her level it is impossible not to make money. Tax billionaires, A LOT.

Took me a long while to understand this too. Without wishing to blow my own trumpet (toot toot) I am great at prose and characterisation but broadly terrible at plot, which is why my first two novels were basically me colouring in a true story.

first in my bloodline to see someone get excommunicated by a community note
"Magataotao" on Twitter writes: "I am Catholic. This👇is not my Pope."

Attached is a video of the Pope saying that we should search for peace and reject war.

A community note under their tweet says: "You are not a Catholic if you do not accept the Pope, but rather a schismatic.

Canon 751: “Schism is the refusal of submission to the Supreme Pontiff,” ie. the Pope.

This shit is bleak but also I will continue to write novels from my actual brain until said brain is soup because crafting a novel is one of the single greatest joys in my life, and I will continue to read novels crafted by humans because if I didn’t I would wither and die.

idk guys when i see a lot of similar headlines insisting that editors & authors are all already embracing AI, i don't assume these things are true. i assume there are a lot of very rich people with an unpopular product pushing a particular narrative in my industry!
thebookseller ig account saying NEWS: some editors uploading confidential manuscripts to ChatGPT to read quickly, agent claimsthe guardian: I wrote a novel using AI. Writers must accept artificial intelligence – but we are as valuable as ever | Stephen Marchethe walrus bsky account: Authors are using AI. Publishers know it. And now, says publishing consultant Thad McIlroy, authors are being forced to lie about it. One cancelled horror novel didn’t just end a career—it exposed an industry-wide reckoning.
