The reason California has so many small cities surrounding larger ones is that, in the 1960s, small communities wanted to use zoning to keep non-Whites out and the state let them contract city services out from the county to make incorporation financially feasible.

Come the fuck on, man
Yakoushkin, for his part, said he was receiving calls from the New York Times and other outlets asking about the incident. National media and others online, he feared, would conflate the incident with the homophobic and antisemitic attacks Wiener, who has become a favorite target of the right-wing, faces daily.
"I think homophobia is disgusting and antisemitism is disgusting, but what happened in the park is not that," he said. "It's unfortunate this is being conflated and that homophobes and antisemitic folks are hoping on this as a bandwagon. We hate him for a very different reasons, and we do not include those folks. They're worse than Scott."

I am glad Joe Garofoli picked up this bit from our conversation. The gatekeeping within the queer community about queer authenticity, especially targeted towards members of our community in elected office, is something else www.sfchronicle.com/politics/joe...
"I always find that fascinating, that within the LGBTQ+ community, we can get very hierarchical," Jane Natoli, co-chair of the Alice B. Toklas LGBTQ Democratic Club and a Wiener supporter, told me Sunday.
"Here's someone saying that he, who has done more for the LGBTQ community in the legislature than any of those people screaming at him will likely do in their lifetime, is somehow unwelcome because of an issue that they disagree on, but is not core to what is impacting the LGBTQ community every day."
Natoli said, "Some people just feel that there's a certain way you're supposed to show up if you're a queer person, and that if you don't do that, then you're not queer enough anymore, you're not really representing the community."

Our economic recovery hasn't been felt equally. Low-income jobs were lost much more rapidly and have been much slower to come back. I am against RR Measure to increase the sales tax to fund CalTrain operations. I'm voting no on RR to protect our small businesses and working people, and ease their burden. If public transit is a public good, let's leverage local resources and legislative power to approach state and federal funding sources from a regional approach.

Making it illegal to build new homes for yuppies does not keep older homes affordable. Rich people just buy the old homes and build luxurious new homes inside their walls, which drives up the price of housing. I understand that this is unsatisfying to people who want housing for the neediest first.

Here's the reality about the #LAFires this week: this isn't the first time ANY of these places have burned. Not even close. In 2018, we mapped CA fire history to look at fire frequency across SoCal. Santa Monica Mtns area burns more than anywhere else -- up to once per decade in a given spot. 🧵
Map showing the number of times a location has burned in SoCal and which kind of fire it was: one burning under Santa Ana winds, or one that was a summer, fuel-driven fire without Santa Ana winds. Malibu area had burned at least 8 times from 1900-2017, and has burned twice now since. Image from Kolden and Abatzoglou (2018): https://www.mdpi.com/2571-6255/1/2/19
