📌 The main finding is that working alongside more university-educated colleagues has a liberalizing effect on political attitudes, independent of an individual's own level of education. Panel data suggests that not only selection effects drive the association.

Grateful that the Swedish Research Council (VR) will fund my 🇸🇪 occupational change detective project with Roujman Shahbazian and Erik Bihagen @sofi.su.se Has the national occupational structure upgraded or polarised in recent decades, and how have these national trends played out locally? 🕵️
Has the Swedish labour market upgraded or polarised? Multiverse and spatial analyses 1990-2020

Although it is universally agreed that globalisation and technological change have profoundly reshaped the Swedish job structure over the past 30 years, there is no scientific consensus on whether these transformations have led to upgrading, characterised by strong growth of high-quality jobs, or polarisation, characterised by growth in low and high-quality jobs and decline in the middle. This yields a research question with implications for individual quality of life and Swedish
education and welfare policy: what has really happened to the Swedish job structure? By running multiverse analysis of labour market change in Sweden over the period 1990-2020 using population register and survey data, the project will first assess whether Swedish labour market change is best characterised by upgrading or polarisation, and systematically analyse the sources of contradiction in existing evidence. It will then analyse how these national transformations have
played out at the regional and local level, recognising that country-level trends can mask a diversity of regional experiences. The project will contribute important insight into how well the Swedish labour market has absorbed an increasingly qualified population and how the job structure is likely to evolve with further technological advances,
including generative AI.

Great to see this out! @jaclarner.bsky.social @danielwincott.bsky.social and I found that national identity responds to referendums. The effect was temporary after the Scottish referendum, but post-Brexit the identity gap between Remain and Leave voters has grown considerably over time. 🧵

Two extraordinary charts from today’s PISA test results: 1) School test scores continue to collapse internationally, underscoring how this is no longer a Covid effect but sustained decline. Those falls in reading and maths are equivalent to about two years of lost schooling.

New preprint out with @mfphilipp.bsky.social & @eileenpeters.bsky.social ✨️ From #neighborhood exposure to #genderbeliefs? We find that local female employment patterns are linked to beliefs about when mothers should return to full-time work. Read more here: osf.io/preprints/so...
Predicted child age at which the respondent rates maternal full-time employment as appropriate for four subgroups (childless men, childless women, fathers and mothers). Fathers in neighborhoods with dominant traditional employment among women report the highest child age, whereas fathers and childless women in neighborhoods in which traditional employment patterns are not dominant report the lowest child ages.
