The past few days have confirmed for me something I’ve long believed: the American political system is terminally fucked, but the American people are not. Most Americans want to live in a democracy in which everyone has a decent life—the fascists in this regime represent a dying minority.

Pratap Gurung captured this shot of the FABULOUS 🌈 Himalayan Monal (Lophophorus impejanus) or 'danphe,' the national bird of Nepal. The amazing coloration is structural: photonic crystals act like a diffraction grating, turning sunlight into shimmering blues, reds, greens.
A multicolored bird resplendent in metallic copper tail, metallic blue wings, and a deep copper-red neck with a fabulous metal-green topknot, standing on grey rocks, looking majestic AS HELL.

I guess I do think if you participated in the arrest of a five-year-old you are probably just fundamentally incompatible with society. That you are not a safe person for humanity to be around, generally

People in Minneapolis don't like it when secret police come into their city to kill and brutalize them, people in rural areas think it's great. Somehow, this is a problem that Minneapolis is supposed to make amends for.

I cannot emphasize how much “be the news” is the opposite of what I was taught about how to be a good journalist and strikes me as an excellent way to churn out elite solipsism that has nothing to do with the public interest and everything to do with self promotion www.nytimes.com/2026/01/13/b...

29 years ago today, Homer Simpson had an epic chili pepper-induced hallucination. “El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Jomer” first aired January 5, 1997. Most of the sequence was animated completely by David Silverman as he wanted it to look exactly as he had imagined it.

The end goal of Grok sexual harassment is to make women afraid to be visible. It’s a punishment for daring to exist in a way the perpetrators can’t control. There’s no one solution to this, because the problem isn’t just technological. It’s cultural. It’s misogyny. This is just one expression of it.

James Gurney's 'Gigantosaurus', 1997. This image is built into the source code of my brain, I'm sure. The unbelievably rich daylight spectrum of color, the movment, the sharp afternoon shadows.. to me as a child it seemed like a camera had focused through layers of time.

Funny animal videos no longer being trustworthy just fucking sucks all around. I love the wonder of animal behavior and what it says about the experience of being alive. It's because it happened in reality that it's so fun. It's not fun if it was just made up. There's no wonder there.

People keep wondering why they're going after Venezuela. It's because they want to do regime change and control its oil, then use a big tract of land there to keep a tax free "network state" that looks like Dubai but operates like Rhodesia. They are saying this out loud! Believe them!

this is similar to what I've come to think of as the "reverse turing test" when people find synthetic text is "good enough" to complete a task (homework, business report, email) it doesn't mean the machine is smart. it means they were asked to produce something that didn't matter it's diagnostic

This time of year, Louisville nonprofit publishing house Sarabande Books would typically learn how much federal grant money it could rely on for the next publishing cycle. This year, that money isn’t coming.

on top of everything else, nuzzi has the sensibilities of your most embarrassing friend. a guy alternates between saying he wants her to have his children and ghosting her, and she's wringing her hands trying to figure out if they're really in love
The spring and summer of 2024 were busy for Olivia. Bobby was telling her he loved her and wanted to impregnate her, but he was also deeply confusing—he flipped back and forth between passionate engagement and total ghosting—and she was struggling to understand him.
