It really is ethically ~strange when a party in a case does not have the intellectual capacity to listen to their own lawyer’s repeated instructions. In normal circumstances, ethically, I’d be absolutely free to talk to Tarzia directly. But… Tarzia and Coleman… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Email from Jeff Tarzia’s lawyer, confirming he had to go over the fact that he shouldn’t contact the opposing lawyer “again” with his client Tweet from Jeff Tarzia, apparently after that conversation, doing it again.

The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

The most charitable interpretation I can muster for this sentencing judge's effusive praise of a victim impact statement *in the form of an AI video of the murder victim* is the judge was reflecting the victim's family's emotional energy back to them But, man is this grotesque

Was prepping for a public LOAC discussion next week, including on challenges to LOAC compliance. The challenge I cited as an example was sheer brazen disregard for LOAC, as exemplified by Russia. And now Zelenskyy underscores my point.

Palantir shifting from hiring only "Ivy or Ivy-equivalent" degrees to hiring only out of high school is an admission that "training" and "talent" were never factors at all. They were looking for packaging & prestige, and now they're looking for ignorance & impressionability.
Tech companies launching their own programs to train grads because they ‘can’t rely’ on Ivy Leagues
By Lydia Moynihan
Published Oct. 1, 2026, 6:00 a.m. ETAs the university system increasingly becomes a wildly expensive bastion of anti-Western sentiment, key figures in Silicon Valley are betting on alternatives to higher education. They argue that even the Ivy League is no longer producing the best candidates — nor are they even accepting some of the most qualified students.

“It used to be the case that you could rely on somebody who went to an Ivy or Ivy-equivalent to be top notch,” said Jordan Hirsch, who runs Palantir’s semester-long intensive Meritocracy Fellowship, which accepts high school graduates.“But that’s not the case anymore… we suspected that there was a lot of talent being missed.”

The Christa Pike botched execution triggered an old 6th grade memory for me. We were learning how to debate that year, and my topic was death penalty (which is an insane thing for 12 year olds to debate now that I think about it). I was on the anti-death penalty side.

$2M from the public trough for out-of-state travel is wild
Since assuming office in 2015, Paxton left about 730 workdays blank on his official calendars and took over 275 out-of-state trips to places such as the California wine country, Caribbean resorts and European tourism hot spots. The travel cost Texas taxpayers a minimum of $1.9 million to cover expenses charged by his security detail, records show. It is unclear how Paxton has financed much of his portion of the travel.

One of the many horrific aspects of the death penalty is that states are not good at carrying out executions. Every time I post about this, someone responds by saying that it should be simple. But it’s not, and proponents of the death penalty need to own that.

The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows Sarah, the protagonist, holding a red ball labeled "A SILLY MEME".
The second panel shows Sarah taking the ball and going through a door labeled "GROUP CHAT".
The third panel shows a group of women sitting together and consoling one woman in the center. The woman in the center is saying "...And that's how it happened. It's been the worst day of my life."
The fourth panel shows Sarah standing in the doorway behind them awkwardly holding the red ball.

I'm v v curious to hear what legal ethics folks think about this DOJ judicial ethics complaint. As a total nonexpert, it seems nonfrivolous? Whether that's right on the merits--and what the consequence should be if violation(s) are found--feel like pretty important questions.

I’m a historian who does political theory. Political theory is fundamental to debates over justice, and to the shape of actual policy in the past & present. It might seem abstract, but it’s interwoven in the law. Without theory, there is no science of politics. Justice is framed by human debates.
