They're fighting down in the Far Right sludge. Maajid Nawaz (remember him?) is taunting Carl Benjamin of Restore ('Sargon of Akkad') over a surfaced old recording. Others wading in with other old recordings, one with Benjamin saying he has a black grandparent 'so he's a fraud'. It's grim but... 🍿

Let's see if Labour can fully get back in line with the values of their core and stay there. If so, that's likely good for them and the country. (The Greens may have to focus on helping remind Labour their real electoral threat is on the left. Still a useful function).

Labour have been able to bounce back because much of their previous problems were due to voters feeling a pretty personal sense of betrayal under Starmer. Voters seem willing to give them a fresh start under Burnham. That does cut down on the number of values voters feeling compelled to vote Green.

Let me just say that anecdotally the mood of immigrants on the other side of academia is very much “get out of here, no matter what it takes.” A combination of nativist immigration policy and a complete disregard for higher education. Destroying a sector that this country could be proud of.

Part of the problem with UK politics is the idea that personal finances are somehow independent of wider societal contexts... an extra fiver in the pocket soon gets swallowed up paying for services that could be provided more cheaply by the state.

In the presidential immunity case, the court considered a hypothetical of a president ordering Navy Seals to assassinate an American political rival. Trump's lawyer argued unambiguously yes, since it'd be an "official act." The Roberts Court ruled in his favor, 6-3. Why wouldn't Trump believe this?

There we have it. Reform officially ditches its pledge - or rather, its 2024 "contract" with voters - to back proportional representation. A clear breach of contract... Via Politico:
In other Reform news: Second-in-command Richard Tice finally admitted that now the voting system Farage has long railed against could help him win a general election, the party no longer wants to scrap it. Farage used to want first-past-the-post replaced with a form of proportional representation.

Here’s the line: “In order to rescue the country from the gravity of the chaos that we face, actually a proper majority is needed from a right of center, conviction-led Reform government,” Tice told Times Radio this morning. Asked whether that meant Reform no longer wants electoral reform, he said: “Yes, because the crisis is so great.”

Not sure how many Leavers will still be around in 2-3 General Elections time? Younger folks skew broadly pro-Europe and so I tend to think that if we can negotiate 2029 the demographics lean in a positive direction. My main concern would be the nature of the EU by that time given rightwards shift.

Anyway, this isn't about the merits of either policy, but about how we as a society view the generations - who is deserving and valued, who is worth protecting, when we demand the state steps in vs when we insist it's a matter of "personal responsibility". Pensioners trump children, every day
