"I guess you thought I wouldn't show up today," said the old man who rambles too much, "but here I am late as usual just as the fire's burning low. Time's running out but I have a detective yarn about a little girl and a small train. Want to hear it? It's in the Alt. Text this time."

A family, father daughter and mother, stand on railway tracks next to a miniature steam engine just after the Second World War. Dad, pipe in mouth, open-necked shirt and pullover underneath a loose tweed jacket that has pockets bulging, looks serious. He holds his small blonde daughter's hand and she, clad in frock, sandals and cardigan, clutches a small doll in her other hand. She smiles broadly, something she went on doing the rest of her long life. My lovely wife, Janet aged around six. Behind her, her mum is smartly dressed and coiffed - black jacket and dress, smiling slightly. The men working on the engine are unimportant right now. I found this picture after Janet died earkier the year and can't ask her about its history. So, the detective story. I enlarge the nameplate of the loco. DOCTOR SYN. Unusual. A quick internet search reveals that one line has an engine with that name - the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch but it is down on the south coast in Kent not far from wherev we now live and Janet and I have been on it a few years back. Surely she would have remembered travelling there from Merseyside as a child? I call the railway and send my picture so engineers can establish if it is theirs and, yes, quick confirmation comes. Doctor Syn was a well known local smuggler and an engine was always named for him. So, I solved the location of the photograph but not why the family from Wirral were so far from home. A holiday perhaps. Tom was a great motorist, having learned in the forces during the war. So a detective story without a resolution. My son called me Sherlock Jones when I told him. However, I think the pipe and deerstalker man would have found an elementary answer to the mystery.
