Vibrant you say @atlanticbirding.bsky.social? Well, you know what's coming ... a #RainbowLorikeet of course. These vibrant beauties certainly brighten up any day. My 'feathered rainbows'. #BirdOfTheDay #Black&White: Main theme #Vivid: Alt theme #Birds #ECK #Australia
A Rainbow Lorikeet sits on a cross branch in front of a background of a green bushy tree.

The rainbow lorikeet is a vibrant parrot about 30 cm long, known for its colourful plumage, which includes a blue head and tummy, red curved beak, green wings, and an orange-yellow breast. They are highly social and energetic birds, often found in flocks, and primarily feed on nectar and pollen.

Australian researchers Isabel Joy Bear & Richard Grenfell Thomas came up with the term/word 'petrichor'. It is a great word, been trying to use it in a verse for a while. That was my task today. #Verse #Prose #Petrichor #ECK #PoetryCommunity #DroughtBreakingRain #Australiana #Poetry
The image accompanying this piece is of grey and greenish storm clouds.

Text:

Petrichor Intoxication

Earth’s surface lay cracked,
like a shattered window,
crevices widening in
the desiccated air,
the colour green
evaporated long since,
replaced by tanned clay

Clouds of puffed up white,
floated by, unable to change
the thirsting landscape below,
earth slowed its rhythm,
survival mode activated

Woven within the heated air the
Raven’s funereal hymn echoed over
paddocks of shimmering mirages,
the mighty Spotted Gum shed limbs,
deep roots exhausted

night, day, night, day, night, day, night, day

earth’s rotation count lost, as nature waited

With a crack, and a baritone rumble
slate grey-green clouds rolled heavily,
slowly, from the previously vacant sky,
winds teased the clouds,
shaking them from side to side,
demanding a release

One, then another, liquid tears fell,
exploded in puffs of powdered dust,
curtains of rain released upon a
begging earth, nature delirious,
intoxicated by petrichor

We know it, don't we? Feel it, felt it. The kind of longing which has no end. Kind of like a shadow falling in love with the sun - impossible. #Verse #Prose #PoetryCommunity #LongingForThatWhichCannotBe #Shadow #NonsenseReally
Shadow Longing

Once long ago, when time began
Shadow fell in love with the Sun

As the Sun traverses the sky, transfixed
Shadow perpetually follows in Sun’s wake

Morphing in shape, tone, number, texture
the devotion, compulsion has no limit

Aeon upon aeon Shadow will yearn
for a love which cannot be

Shadow only exists where the light
cannot reach, where it is absent

Futile is Shadow’s love, always be so
a tale as old as time, as eternal as longing

Two Galahs face to the right, and looking towards the camera. They are standing on a flat, elevated platform where a variety of seeds have been placed. The background is blurred green foliage and a brown tree trunk.

The Galah can be easily identified by its rose-pink head, neck and underparts, with paler pink crown, and grey back, wings and undertail. Galahs have a bouncing acrobatic flight, but spend much of the day sheltering from heat in the foliage of trees and shrubs. Huge noisy flocks of birds congregate and roost together at night.

Red and Green
Should Always be Seen

In folk lore of old,
it were often told,
colours, red and green,
should never be seen

Yet in modern day,
be there more leeway,
as nature proclaims
red and green doth reign

For Spring's gallery
deems it most worthy
that flowers and trees
flaunt their reds and greens

I remember you in the Autumn
when all turned a golden orange
leaves danced with the wind

I remember you in the Winter

But mostly …

I remember you in the Spring
when Freesias perfumed the air

Here is a pair of handsome #SpangledDrongos. Oft times I wonder just who names these birds, The term 'drongo' has a not so nice slang meaning in Australian culture. Not fit for this beautiful bird. Thanks Rob @robcrank68.bsky.social #BirdOfTheDay #Pairs Alt: #Green #Birds #ECK
Two Spangled Drongos sit on a tree branch, with a green and part sky background. They are both facing left.

The Spangled Drongo has glossy black plumage, with iridescent blue-green spots (spangles), a long forked tail and blood red eyes. Sexes are similar, but the female is slightly smaller. Occasional white spotting can be seen on the upper wings of both sexes. Young birds are more sooty black without the spangles and the eye is brown. The Spangled Drongo is noisy and conspicuous, usually active, and frequently aggressive to other species.

Spring - The Renewer

I observe you, as leaf by leaf you
reclothe yourself after a
season of nakedness, your tender,
lime-green leaves dance with
the breeze, as your slender branches
sway to and fro, a mesmerising
celebration of renewed verve

	life arouses in my land

I hear you, as your ‘coo-ee’ incessantly
floats upon the warming air currents,
ready to begin the next generation
after your migratory journey from the
lands to the north, oh my shiny black,
red-eyed Eastern Koel, you are the
harbinger of this returning season

	life returns in my land

I feel you, as longer days chase
cool mornings into retreat, as the
sun’s brilliance burns the sand
beneath my bare feet, as easterly
salt-laden sea breezes bring relief,
as an awakening flutter within
calls me to begin anew

	life renews in my land

The Sound of Wind

With force, with gentleness, with flow
winds roam the earth, following a
primeval call, orchestrated by the sun
through the ebb of highs and lows

oft times soft, caressing, lingering,
exploring with curiosity the shape,
the design of all in its path with its
velvety breath, sensuous vapours

then like the sound of a thousand
thundering hooves, the wind rages
through valleys, atop cliffs, bending
all it encounters to its will, its might

The winds

   voiceless whistling
      raging, deafening roars
         meandering, swooshing air currents
            undulating waves of timeless sound

reign unhindered, untameable, unconquerable

Life Sounds

Night gently encompasses me like a
cashmere shawl, outside birds chatter
with regularity, as if trying to relay their
day’s happenings before the light is finally
siphoned from the day, raucous cries
from patrons at a nearby Pub, float
unhindered through my windows,
backyard hens cluck with content,
settling down for the coming darkness,
in the distance, ocean waves crash
rhythmically with a hushed roar
against the compliant shore

   life

the sounds of life continuously
weave in and out, recording
a never-ending story

September

With a hush of quiet whispers, you arrived,
tickling my senses, causing a sneeze

Hello September, quiet you may be
however, there is a boldness surrounding your days,
once the seventh month, now the ninth,
you give no heed to human antics,
confident in knowing your own place

Within your days, the sun climbs to a point
directly above the equator, matching
equal daylight with equal darkness,
for a short period all living things
bask in nature’s equality

Equality, a noble and just goal,
where difference is not feared, nor imprisoned,
rather celebrated and embraced

Oh September, guardian of the tilting earth,
may your quiet, bold days
weave the magic of equality
throughout this globe of ours

Took a bit of a deep dive into myself today ... always an interesting exercise. Such an unexplored terrain all too often neglected. #Verse #Audrey'sRamblings #PerhapsPoetry #KnowThyself
Text:

The Me I Am

Today, I journeyed inside myself
took stock of what it is that
determines the me I am

first I encountered the brokenness,
these being the parts which always
clamour to be noticed …
brokenness caused by loss, grief,
disappointments,
failures, judgements,
any of which could easily define me

	but they don’t

going deeper, I found the dreams,
ideals, hopes, longings, wishes,
which over time have been
overwhelmed by the brokenness,
even though weaker now,
could easily fade away, be forgotten

	but they won’t

woven within all that is me, are
threads of my strengths, abilities,
characteristics which are uniquely mine,
values, principles built over years
through experience and learning,
any of which could easily break

	but they don’t

there, at the core of
all that weaves together,
the tapestry of the me I am
is my true self,
my authentic self
I don’t want to lose her

	and I won’t

The mind is an alien terrain,
not always predictable,
able to be constrained by
the rules and expectations
of a society which demands too much
of those whose brain chemistry
rules, dictates ones behaviour

for a mind which struggles with each day,
a beautiful, chaotic mind needs to be allowed
to develop its own patterns
within the nurturing of love
until it finds acceptance within itself

All it took was to come across a bunch of Daffodils this morning, & words started to form. Took me in a direction I didn't know I was headed. Even though we get on with living when a loved one dies, never means that we will ever stop missing them. And, that's perfectly fine. #Verse #Poetry #Grief

Colours of Missing

When you miss me most,
your heart is heavy,
meet me in the yellow,
the yellow of the daffodils,
be reminded of my smile

When you miss me most,
feel that you can no longer go on,
meet me in the green,
the green of those rolling hills
where once we wandered

When you miss me most,
loneliness your only companion,
meet me in the blue,
the blue of a clear, cool day,
hear my laughter once more

When you miss me most,
sleep interrupted by torment,
meet me in the silver,
the silver of a moonlit night,
remember my soft embrace

When you miss me most,
tears blur your vision,
meet me in the red,
the red of my captured heart,
know my love never ceased

All those times,
when you miss me most,
be surrounded by
all the colours of living,
notice those traces of me
still woven within you

Nothing to see here. Just your standard tree stump. Move along. Not sure that I've met the theme for today's #BirdOfTheDay which is #BirdsInAbstract. But this fella has certainly gone undercover. The reveal is in the ALT.
The Tawny Frogmouth is the master/mistress of camouflage.

The Tawny Frogmouth (Podargus strigoides) is a nocturnal Australian bird that resembles an owl but is actually more closely related to nightjars. It's famous for its exceptional camouflage, which allows it to look like a broken tree branch during the day. Tawny Frogmouths occur across most of Australia and feed mainly on insects and other small animals.

Their plumage is mottled grey, white, black and rufous – the feather patterns help them mimic dead tree branches.

Capsules release spindly, bold filaments
cylindrical, red, bright flowers, cascade
as lit pendants upon verdant newness
reaching outwards proclaiming spring’s advent
enticing birds and bees with sweet nectar

Awoken life filters throughout the land

'Excuse me, did I say you could take my photo? You humans just take so many liberties, as if you own everything.' Not sure this #Scaly-BreastedLorikeet was keen on having his photo taken. 🤷‍♀️ Thanks Helen #BirdOfTheDay #BirdsInGreen #Birds #Australia
A Scaly-Breasted Lorikeet looks a little perturbed whilst sitting in the midst of a Bottle Brush tree. Surrounding the Lorikeet are red bottle flowers.

The Scaly-breasted Lorikeet is a small parrot native to eastern Australia. It is characterised by its vibrant green plumage with yellow scales, red beak, and red-orange eyes. This species is commonly found in coastal regions, ranging from Cape York in Queensland to Wollongong in New South Wales. They often hang out with the Rainbow Lorikeets.

This is my first ever piece of 'iambic pentameter' poetry. What a challenge. I've started learning the 'rhythm & metre' of poetry writing, so alien to me. I had to really work at finding the right words. Accompanied it with a strange piece of driftwood I came across. #Poetry #Poem #ECK #Ocean
The image is of a piece of long driftwood stuck into the sand. To me it looks like a crocodile like creature listening, or looking, out towards the ocean. In the background are breaking waves, with lots of white froth. A patch of white water, at the top left corner, has captured some of the morning light.

Ocean Might

Which even insentient beings heard
Come, rouse from slumber, heed the voice of might

Words often pop into my head and I let my pen (yes, most of my verses start with pen & paper) have its way. As with this piece. It ended not where I expected. I also included a photo of an #Echidna who came by one birthday to say g'day. #Verse #Poetry #PoetryCommunity #EastCoastCommunity #Australia
The photo accompanying this piece is of an Echidna. The Echidna is facing forward with its short snout. It is surrounded by greenery.

Info about the Echidna:

Echidnas, sometimes known as spiny anteaters, are quill-covered monotremes belonging to the family Tachyglossidae, living in Australia & New Guinea. The four extant species of echidnas & the platypus are the only living mammals that lay eggs and the only surviving members of the order Monotremata. The diet of some species consists of ants and termites, but they are not closely related to the American true anteaters or to hedgehogs.

They are shy creatures and would rather retreat than fight if disturbed. When frightened it will curl into a ball, with its snout and legs tucked beneath it and its sharp spines sticking out. It will wedge itself beneath rocks or burrow straight down into soft soil to escape predators such as dogs, eagles and dingos.

Like the platypus, the male echidna has a hollow spur on its back leg. While a male platypus can use this spur to inject poison into would-be attackers, echidnas do not have this ability.

Borrowed

These words I pen, claim are mine, are no such thing, arrogant to think so, rather they are but borrowed words, entrusted to me to treat with care, arrange with dignity, offer to others with tenderness, so as to convey meaning, emotions, encourage beauty to enter the heart of another

’Tis it not similar to the earth we walk upon, inhabit, to think it belongs to one, or another, is that not also arrogance, the earth, nature and all its creatures, all its vegetation, is not yours, mine, rather each has been entrusted to humankind to treat with care, dignity and tenderness

Walk gently upon our shared earth, embrace nature and all her wonders as a borrowed treasure, one whose worth is without measure

Use and speak your words with benevolence, for once given cannot be returned, and their influence can either be inspiring, or malevolent

A little melancholic self reflection today, as I observe the changing of seasons outside my window. #ImageAndVerse #Poetry #PoetryCommunity #ChangingSeasons #Trees
The image accompanying this poem is a grayscale photo of the bare branches of the top of a large tree. Bare branches reach up from the bottom into a grey sky.

Text:

The Nature of Changing

Outside that place, I call home,
I watch the wind courting you,
swaying your naked branches to and fro,
I have observed you many years,
as the seasons rotate,
I know spring is calling you to
clothe yourself once more in
bright green newness,
and I await your response

Within the waiting,
I too feel the call
to renewal, newness

yet my response
is undetermined,
not as cyclical
as your changing

Now you know that I'm more of a sunrise photographer kind of girl, or just all round photographer. Well one morning a #White-BelliedSeaEagle wanted to get in on the action. Who am I to object? 😊 Oh to fly on wings as an Eagle. Alan's #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #InFlight Alt #Grounded #ECK #BOTD
A White-Bellied Sea Eagle is flying at the top of this photo with the rays of a new day behind it. Grey clouds traverse the sky, just above the horizon. Rain is falling at intervals. The ocean is a greenish colour.

Info about the Eagle: The White-bellied Sea Eagle is the second largest raptor found in Australia, they are a common sight in coastal and near coastal areas of Australia, including inland river systems. The White-bellied Sea Eagle has white on the head, rump and underparts and dark grey on the back and wings. In flight, the black flight feathers on the wings are easily seen when the bird is viewed from below. The large, hooked bill is grey with a darker tip, and the eye is dark brown. The legs and feet are cream-white, with long black talons (claws). The sexes are similar. As in other raptors (birds of prey), Males (2.5 kg – 3.7 kg) are slightly smaller than females (2.8 kg – 4.2 kg).The wingspan is about 1.8 m – 2 m. Young Sea Eagles are brown as juveniles then slowly resemble adults in a patchwork manner, acquiring complete adult plumage by their fourth year.

I have a very small file of bird photos, but somehow I can post what I have every now and then. You've seen my wondrous #KingParrot before, however, I did happen to get one of him snoozing. So I just make it again, thanks Helen. #BirdOfTheDay #BirdNaps Alt: #BrightAccents #ECK #Birds #Australia
An Australian King Parrot takes a nap. The Parrot has a bright red head, and body, with green wings. He has an orange beak, black eyes with a yellow trim around the eye. He is facing left and in sitting on a light brown tree branch. A patch of sunlight lights up his back. He's a relaxed fella. The background is a mix of out of focus tree trunks and a green fence

Today I stumbled across a new word, well new to me, and immediately I fell in love with it ... Psithurism. It whispers off the tongue. Do look up its meaning. #BlueSkyPoetry #BSPP57 #September #poetry #poetryCommunity Word Prompt: Waiting Key #Psithurism #WhisperingWinds
The image accompanying this poem is of green Gum leaves with a few light coloured horizontal branches. I've played around with the photo, so it may seem a little strange. Trying to be artistic with my photos.

Sound of Wind

Do you hear it?
The sound of wind?

Wind has no sound of its own,
only heard when it
blows through things,
or, around things,
sometimes it blows soft,
oft with gusto,
other times as a gale

Yet, the sound of psithurism
is the most enchanting …
gentle winds whispering
through trees, rustling leaves,
inviting moments of reflection,
calm, muting the chaos,
the busyness stealing serenity

It’s sound is the waiting key,
which nature anticipates so to
strike up earth’s orchestra,
in the continuation of
the unfinished score
that is the story of who we are

The only white bird I have photos of is this #Sulphur-CrestedCockatoo who came to visit one afternoon with some sad news ... but that's another story. Think he'll do for Rob's #BirdOfTheDay theme: #ItsAllWhite (bird's main colour is white) #ECK #Australia #Birds #Joel'sStory
A big white bird sits on a backyard clothesline. The bird is all white, with a black beak, black eyes, a yellow crest, and pale yellow underparts on his tail feathers. He is facing left.

(The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is a large white cockatoo. It has a dark grey-black bill, a distinctive sulphur-yellow crest and a yellow wash on the underside of the wings. Sexes are similar, although the female can be separated at close range by its red-brown eye (darker brown in the male). This is a noisy and conspicuous cockatoo, both at rest and in flight. Young Sulphur-crested Cockatoos resemble the adults.)

'If I stay very still, she will think I am a Bottle Brush flower.' Nope, mister #ScarlettHoneyeater you can't hide from me. Alan's #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #FlowerPower any bird capture with a flower in view. (How about a bird trying to camouflage as a flower?) #ECK #I'mRunningOutOfBirdPhotos
A Scarlet Honeyeater in the middle of the photo, standing on a branch in a Bottle Brush tree. He is facing the left and there are numerous red Bottle Brush flowers around him. There are also green leaves and a blurred background of browns and greens.

The Scarlet Honeyeater, also known as the scarlet myzomela, is a small bird native to Australia, measuring about 9 to 11 cm in length. Males are bright red with black wings, while females are brown, and they primarily feed on nectar, fruit, and insects in forest habitats along the eastern coast of Australia.

In Australia the 1st of September is National Wattle Day, where Aussies celebrate Australia, and what it is to be Australian. G'day to all Aussies, and all Aussies at heart. #BlueSkyPoetry #BSPP57 #OpenWindow Word Prompt: Open Window #Verse #Poetry #ECK #Prose #Wattle #WattleDay #Australia
The image accompanying this poem is of a Golden Wattle, the National Floral emblem of Australia. It is a glowing yellow coloured flowering tree/shrub made up of many tiny balls of golden yellow.

From the National Wattle Day website: Golden Wattle is a unifying symbol of Australia and Australians. There is no other symbol that says so much about what it takes to survive and thrive in this ancient land;

Wattles are Australian with great diversity (more than 1,077 described Acacia species) and resilience like our people;

Wattle welcomes the spring, and is among the first plants to regenerate after fire, reminding us of the importance of renewal as it paints our national colours across our landscapes; and

All wattles remind us of Australia and Australians.

Open Window

Through the open window
   stale winter air is drawn
replaced by the freshness of spring

Through the open window
   sounds of transition, drift
   the worn, well-used, replaced

Through the open window
   fragrances of awakening blooms
   replace the damp of enclosure

Through the open window
what was, replaces what can be
an open window, a threshold moment

To say that I love this fella, would be an understatement. The #KingParrot is just magical. For 30 minutes I had the pleasure of his company one fine afternoon. I do so miss my backyard and the many feathered ones who visited. (Miss my fella too.) Helen's #BirdOfTheDay is #BirdsUpClose #ECK #Birds
An Australian King Parrot sits on a tree branch, facing left. His red head is highlighted by dappled light. The background is green.

Male Australian King-Parrots are the only Australian parrots with a completely red head. Females are similar to males except that they have a completely green head and breast. Both sexes have a red belly and a green back, with green wings and a long green tail. King parrots are normally encountered in pairs or family groups.

Often I wish I could have control of some things ... but that may be a little disastrous. Well, a girl can daydream. #Verse #Prose #Poetry #ECK #AlwaysADreamer #ALittleWaffling
The image accompanying this piece of writing is of a golden sunrise. The gold sun is reflected in the clouds and shimmers on the ruffled ocean.

Text:

To Control Light

If I could control light,
I’d find every drop of water,
co-opt the sun, to
reflect through each one,
and fill every corner
of this earth
with rainbows

If I could control light,
I’d take the lambency from
the dawn and dusk,
bathe every mountain,
hill, forest, tree
in soft hues,
highlighting beauty
that would melt
the hardest of hearts

If I could control light,
I’d thread every cloud
with wisps of gold,
urge the sun to
create sparkling diamonds
on every surface of water,
so that the earth would
blink with unmatched splendour

If I could control light,
I’d soften the darkness,
empower the stars and planets,
to shimmer brighter,
so that none would fear
the night hours, rather
welcome its presence as
a returning friend

Yet, light is beyond
the control of one such as I,
so then when this
effulgent wonder works
it’s magic, I will pause,
allow it to wrap me
in its splendour,
acknowledging its gift
