It is #WorldAnimalDay. I wonder if they have been told? I asked the new village resident, who shares a field with donkeys Mildred and Georgie (we haven't been formally introduced, so I don't know his name, yet) and I have it from the horse's mouth that they did not get the invite. How rude.
Briwn horse approaching for a chat. When told about the special day of which he was unaware, he turned upon his hooves and left. Can't say I blame him. Digger in background but we did that yesterday.

I promised Susan @sdcushing.bsky.social a picture book for #BlueBrewBooks. Will this do? #BirdWatchingUK #Nature #Reading
Front of The Book of Birds
From the Creators of
The Lost Words
Jackie Morris & Robert Macfarlane
Two colourful Bullfinches sit on a branch. The cover is cream with a blue spine. It sits on an oak table in sunlight next to a pair of RSPB binoculars.Book open on the table at page, showing an illustration of a Lapwing in flight and on the ground and, opposite page, description plus egg and Latin name Vanellus vanellus.Words on rear cover:
A great thinning of the skies is underway. Around fifty per cent of bird species are in decline worldwide. Our dawns and springs are quieter each year than the last. It does not have to be this way - but we will not save what we do not love.
The Book of Birds is a compendium of forty-nine bird species, from Avocet to Yellowhammer, all of which are declining or endangered in Britain. Inspired by the classic bird-books with which the authors grew up, this is a field guide with a difference. It asks not 'What is that bird?, but 'Who is that bird?" It shows its readers how to identify birds, but also how to identify with them.
With lyrical precision and playfulness, Robert Macfarlane evokes each bird's habits and habitats - their patterns of flight and of song, how they nest and hunt, the threats which shadow them, and how their wild lives intersect with ours. And on every page we encounter Jackie Morris's exhilarating artwork, painted in watercolour and gold, animated by an extraordinary attention to detail and presence. Set among this dazzling flock of species are seven sections celebrating the 'Seven Wonders' that together make up the everyday miracle of 'Bird': Nest, Egg, Beak, Song, Feather, Flight and Migration.
Seven years in the making, The Book of Birds is a love letter to the splendours and mysteries of birdlife, and a clarion call to halt the loss of birds from land, sea and sky.
From Dipper to Dunnock and Kestrel to Kingfisher, from mountain to ocean and city to river, Jackie Morris and Robert Macfarlane conjure the unique spirit and lifeway of each species. This is a book to be treasured by bird-lovers of all ages, and a future classic work of reference.

#3rdPlace #BlueSkyArtShow My next choice is vaguer: Europe and it stands for all we lost with the crass decision to leave the European Union. In 1972, a year before we had joined, my lovely wife and I travelled through the Continent in a VW camper. It was a joyful experience. #ECK #Photography
A familiar picture to my followers. My wife and I sit in the open door of our little red VW T2 campervan in a clearing in forested land in Sweden, late summer of 1972. Mean green machine. A tree surgeon uses a chainsaw to hack down a hedge that had grown into a small forest at the end of a neighbour's garden this morning. Very noisy for a Saturday morning and the birds did not like it. #AlphabetChallenge #WeekMforMachines #ColorADay #GreenSat #ECK #Photography
A worker, in safety helmet and harness, strapped to the thin trunk of a tree and with a chainsaw hanging from his belt, stops to contemplate his next move. The branches of the overgrown Cypress Leylandii hedge, that had over the years become a small forest, surround the tree surgeon. People often plant this variety as a quick-growing hedge and then neglect to keep it under control. This is often the result.

Morning #BlueSky ☕️ Is this another thinly veiled excuse to show a picture of the pups or is it matching today’s theme of where l come in the pecking order? Have a great day friends ☺️ #ECK #BlueSkyArtShow #3rdPlace #Photography #PhotographyOfBlueSky #PhotographersOfBlueSky #BlueSkyDogs #BillAndTed
Our photograph shows two small dogs sitting together on a large, plush turquoise armchair in a warmly lit room.

Ted, on the left, is a small, fluffy dog with golden-brown and cream fur. He has a mostly white face with warm tan markings around his ears and forehead, large dark eyes, and a black nose.

His ears are floppy and slightly feathered. Ted is sitting at an angle, with one front paw resting over the edge of a deep blue cushion. He looks directly towards the camera with a gentle, alert expression.

Bill, on the right, is a smaller black dog with distinctive tan and white markings. He has upright, pointed ears, a white muzzle and chest, and tan markings above his eyes, on his cheeks and legs.

His fluffy tail rises behind him, curling upwards. Bill is sitting upright beside Ted, looking straight at the camera with a curious, confident expression.

The dogs are nestled closely together on the chair, partly surrounded by blue and turquoise cushions. The chair’s soft, oversized upholstery creates a cosy setting.

Behind them are windows with pale blinds, a leafy green houseplant and a decorative object. Beneath the chair is a polished wooden floor, adding warm golden-brown tones to the scene.

It is a warm and affectionate portrait of Ted and Bill together, looking proudly into the camera from their favourite cosy chair.

Finally, our picture today is finished with a simple white border frame.

First #SixOnSaturday of October and something different. My house is tiny, the rear garden small but the front minuscule. Here is proof. The main picture is a narrow border crammed with colour. *Details in Alt text. #UKGardening #Bloomscrolling #EastCoastKin #PhotographersOfBluesky
From main picture, clockwise: the narrow shared border between my terrace home's front drive and my next door neighbour, who gives me free rein. White and pink Cosmos have returned from previous years. Blue Ceratostigmas were bought at the supermarket on offer and have spread. Recent additions include light lavender coloured Ageratum (for the bees) and a rusty red Echinacea. Old friends are a rambling rose that once climbed a fence that is no longer there; yellow flowers on a Honeysuckle, that's on a fence that survived between my property and my other neighbour; purple Pansies in a blue pot that has been planted with Spring flowering Tulip bulbs; pink and white Hydrangea blooms that were all but dead during the drought but are struggling back to life now, by the bird feeders; Michaelmas Daisies by my green front door; a close-up of the Ceratostigma flowers, also known as Plumbago.
Maybe next week I shall do a tour of my vast estate out back. 😂

Image: Thin, stretched, wispy white clouds in a blue sky. The bottom of the image is a golden yellow colour.

Text:

Rebirth

From the beyond
threaded through a
million, million
particles of air
a song
faint
ethereal
floated
upon the
gentlest
of breezes
ascending
descending

eyes closed
slowed heart beat
I surrendered
to my sense of
hearing
as the song
grew louder
then quietly dipped
luring my soul
onwards
as one whose
thirst
needed to be
quenched
by those
other-worldly
notes to survive

momentarily
the song
disappeared
plunging
my soul into
a valley of
despair
life’s colours
turned to
ashen grey
every part of me
yearned
for the
song’s return
for it had
captured me
enraptured me

like a newborn’s
first breath
the song
re-emerged
within every
cell of my being
imprinting its
harmonies
inside my DNA
remaking
recreating me

from the
clutches
of grief
the song
of life
sang me anew

Some nights the view from my little back garden in a small English village is worth a billion pounds to me. Sky on fire a couple of minutes ago. This morning it was the Moon putting on a show and now the Sun has decided he ain't going to be upstaged by that gal. #Scape #Sunset #Sunset #Photography
Staggeringly fiery sky as the sun goes down, turning trees to black silhouetted onlookers.

Moths matter! 📢 Which is why we're on a mission to create the first official Red List of Britain’s Macro-moths Without this formal recognition, species risk being overlooked when national, regional and local decisions about conservation priorities and funding are made. 📷: Rob Blanken
