~Approximately no one in the general public knows because the leaders of the R1 research universities - whose budgets, programs, & personnel are entirely or significantly dependent on federal funding - have been totally absent from the public square in explaining & collectively protesting this.

If blue collar work was inherently upwardly mobile, everyone would do it. But the world doesn’t work that way. Capitalism doesn’t work that way. And people who romanticize blue collar work as having a quiet dignity are being patronizing, even if they don’t intend to

The people talking about the dignity of being, say, a welder, have never welded anything. And as far as “the pay is actually good” arguments go, the starting pay is good. The pay a few years in is good. But there’s a ceiling and it hits at about the same time the physical toll of the job does

This kind of logic is just dressed up racism and, quite frankly, cowardice. "I'm too afraid to live next door to someone who looks or thinks differently than I do" is a sign of a weak society, not a strong one.

"The current level of political animosity is exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s citizens." There are not enough exclamation points to convey how I felt reading this paragraph
Screenshot of article which reads: From this perspective, the “both sides” frame falls apart. The prob-
lem is not that the parties are divided. The problem is the existential
threat that a reempowered ethnonationalist strain poses to pluralistic
U.S. democracy writ large. The current level of political animosity is
exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted
to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s
citizens. The only way to re-oppress most of a country is to use anti-
democratic and authoritarian tactics. And the only way to oppose those
tactics is to push back as a population and clearly reject them. This is
the argument happening in the United States, and its pathology is not
anger—it is the movement to undermine a generation of rights.

They're holding up a major escalation in Iran and a crackdown on abortion until after the midterms to limit political damage. To the extent that the last two years have been a right-wing smash-and-grab operation, the next two will be worse.

Fun facts: Chris Rufo’s grandmother was an Italian immigrant who, I’ve heard from a reliable source, never learned to speak English fluently. Rufo’s wife meanwhile is an immigrant from Thailand. And the director of the Manhattan Institute who employs him? The son of Muslim immigrants from Bangladesh

as ever i'm struck by the doublethink of these people, who feel the need to dress up their mindless longing for heirarchy and exclusion in the language of liberalism--"high trust," material prosperity, blah blah blah it's a form of magical thinking: "if we do enough racism, good things will happen"

All these investigations showing I’m wrong can’t be right. All of the investigators & all the judges in all the cases are in on it. They’re all biased against me & guilty of misconduct. I’m suing the judges and anybody else who joins the 85+ conclusions against my very correct theory.

The Republican Senate rationalized their failure to impeach him in 2021 because, they said, he would be accountable to legal prosecution. Then the Republican Supreme Court ruled, no, he's not, the only legal accountability was through impeachment.

Trump’s whole appeal was that he was a rich pervert who took pictures with Mike Tyson in the 80’s. The only other person with the cultural cachet to do what he did is, like, maybe Arnold Schwarzenegger. The idea that a dork like JD could helm Trump’s movement is laughable on its face.

Human beings became the apex predator on this planet for one (1) reason: we work together better than any other species that has ever existed. That's why primates were so successful and that's why humans emerged as the primate that stands so far above the rest.

The sort of world view that Hegseth stands for is an inherently unstable equilibrium, a doomed enterprise. It's unable to cope with what even modest levels of abstract reasoning built on basic education can pull off, let alone vastly more powerful social systems.

AI companies made an imaginary friend who you talk to all day and are addicted to and now they can pitch big clients on "hey we got all these people on the hook and can push them to buy your product or vote for your guy and they'll trust the message because it's coming from their friend"

If your goal is to push people to a product or service (or ideology!), you need to establish that AI is coming to these conclusions on its own, and therefore more trustworthy than someone with an obvious agenda. Chatbots can be leaned on by their owners, but most users don't know that.

Dark thread. Since we watched Musk literally push a "protect the Boers" button in real time with Grok, we now know people or companies could theoretically pay their way into putting a thumb on the scale for Grok/Claude/ChatGPT. This is why the AI stans want you to believe it's thinking

I recommend people read this to get a sense of the president's grave cognitive impairment. Trump is either unwilling or unable (or maybe both) to answer the questions he's actually asked, so he just rants and raves while the interviewers do their best to provide structure to his random brain firings

This aligns exactly with what we know about noncitizen voting; it is extremely rare (9 noncitizen votes in MN out of 3,253,920 in the 2024 election, or 0.0002%), and when it occurs it’s most often green card holders who were mistakenly told they could vote (none of these people are undocumented).
