My liege, we are off hunting. Have you brought your falcon? Nay for I have brought my snail.
We are looking at a manuscript of a hare sat on a fearsome looking greyhound. The hare is wearing a gauntlet on which sits a snail who is absolutely up for the hunt.

Among the old plastic washing up from the seabed this week was this fragment - does anyone know what these letters might once have said? Google lens suggests bar of soap (definitely not), bread tag, masonic token, belt dressing (?). We wondered if it might be some sort of badge or nameplate?

Somehow, the world feels like a better place now that I know that a gathering of ladybirds is called a 'loveliness'. So here's a loveliness of ladybirds on a twinklement of stained glass at St. Mary's, Brownshill, Gloucestershire.

This is the tomb of Henry III, who lies buried in the Chapel of St Edward the Confessor in Westminster Abbey The Purbeck marble tomb is decorated with slabs of purple and green antique porphyry and is inlaid with gilded Cosmati mosaic and pieces of coloured marble and glass #31DaysOfTombs #Glass
The marble tomb of Henry III sits framed between two large, cylindrical stone columns inside Westminster Abbey. Atop the tomb lies a golden effigy of a reclining figure, facing right with arms folded. The front panel of the tomb is inlaid with a large piece of porphyry, framed by intricate gold mosaic patterns. Below this, a stone base features geometric patterns in gold mosaic alongside dark diamond and circular stone inlays. Directly above the tomb, a dark, heavy wooden beam structure arches between the two main stone columns. In the background, tiers of arched stone niches and Abbey windows rise behind the tomb.An extreme close-up shows a corner of an ornate Cosmatesque mosaic set into a light brown stone frame.

The frame has a stepped-in design with a smooth, polished finish, showing slight signs of age and wear.

A border of geometric mosaic pattern lines the inside of the frame. This pattern consists of alternating gold, dark blue, and red triangles that form star-like shapes. The gold triangles are gilded, while the blue and red ones are made of glass tesserae.

Below the top border and to the left of the right border is a large spiral shape made of the same mosaic materials. The spiral is composed of alternating gold and red triangles. In the center of the spiral is a round, raised stone element.

To the left of the spiral is a dark red porphyry stone panel, partially visible. The entire mosaic is set into a mortar bed, which is visible in the gaps between the tesserae. An extreme close-up of a mosaic. Triangles of gold leaf, red, and blue tiles form two adjacent diamond patterns outlined in thick, rough grey mortar. A strip of textured brown stone bounds the mosaic on the right side.

I’ve spent a few weeks asking some very intelligent people whether Britain is resilient - can it get back up after being whacked in the face - and the short answer is no, not really. It also seems like a few whacks in the face are quite likely in the future. www.ft.com/content/ba80...

As climate and geopolitical risks cast doubt on the UK’s ability to cope in a crisis, leaders are turning from ‘just in time’ to ‘just in case’ as a governing philosophy

This photograph shows why all archives are wary of silverfish, which thrive in damp conditions: most of the image has been devoured, leaving only the linked arms of this - presumably - bride and groom. #EYAErased
The remnants of a black and white photograph, stuck to a piece of card. Silverfish have devoured most of the image, leaving small patches throughout and a central larger patch showing the linked arms of a woman in a white dress and a man in a suit.

They don’t write news like that any more. (St Alban’s 1871)
HAIR-BREADTH ESCAPE FROM DEATH.-
During a thunderstorm which raged in this neighbourhood on Wednesday afternoon, singular occurrence, by which a man may safely, be said to have had a hair-breadth escape from death by lightning, took place on the bank of the Sopwell stream. From the information of Mr. Smith it appears that himself and two other men were fishing, when an intensely vivid flash of lightning struck the centre man to the ground. Mr. Smith immediately went to his assistance, but before reaching him the electrified fisherman had regained his perpendicularity, and appearing like one intoxicated, challenged to fight his piscatory companion on the left, accusing him of having knocked him down. He remained in this state of stupefaction about ten minutes, after which he recovered his mental equilibrium.
On
examination the whiskers and hair on the left side of his face were found to have been singed, and with this exception he was apparently uninjured by the singular freak of the lightning

From 2019, when the news was telling us that staring seagulls out had been proven to stop them eating your chips
[Scene is a BEACH. A man is sat eating chips on a blanket - or rather he is trying to, but a terrifying, haunted-eyed SEAGULL is stood next to him, staring intently]

SEAGULL:

Well well well.

You must be one of these ‘Starers’.

[Show man trying to stare the seagull out]

SEAGULL:

Read an article in the Guardian did ya? ‘Stare seagulls out to save your chips’...

Come on then.
Look into my eyes.

[We see his cold, terrifying, haunted eyes in close up]

Can you see the darkness?
The things I’ve seen?

[Hypnotic waves are coming out of his eyes now]

The things I’ve... eaten...?

Frozen shit from a sewage pipe off the coast of Sussex…
The still-pulsing intestines from a badger by the A602…

Thaaat’s it

Look into the truth

The truth you’ve always known.

I am a seagull.

I am harder than you.

And I am having your chips.

11 [The man’s facade breaks, His eyes water, his lips wobble]

SEAGULL [Eating chips]:

Nom nom nom.
