I am in a lovely hotel room In Belfast with no plugs next to the bed, and the most infuriating lighting system I have ever come across. Current status: in bed with the big light on, because you can’t turn on the table lamp by itself. Whoever designed this is a sociopath. Good night.

The @ftweekend.com has a new senior writer and it is @willoyd.bsky.social, who has opened his account with this brilliantly written piece of reporting, examining the UK’s resilience (or complete lack of it) in the face of multiple challenges. It’s very bloody good. www.ft.com/content/ba80...

How resilient is Britain?

For today’s @ftweekend.com I am at Kid, which is like a big opening for theatre critics: we all have to weigh in. My take: the food is as lovely as you would expect from Sertac Dirik, but don’t let the ineffably cool Soho setting convince you it’s more radical than it is. www.ft.com/content/7ac7...

I did a 5Live discussion show with him at the height of the Brexit debate, and he kept his eyes closed throughout his answers to why he opposed a second referendum. Wouldn't look at us. Wasn't pleased when I pointed this out to the listeners, who couldn't see what he was doing.

On the BBC News Katya Adler has just described Germany, where the far right AFD keep winning elections, as entering 'uncharted political territory'. Hmmm. Where Germany is concerned I think that territory is pretty well charted.

Alongside my feature on the best brown dish at the weekend we published a recipe for a Tuscan Peposo, a beef and red wine stew with peppercorns. Which we didn’t read properly. Things were missing. Like what to do with the other half of the wine. Apologies. Here’s the correct version.

To complete this story, the first leg to Wolverhampton was fine. But the cross country to Reading was Dante’s 9th circle of hell: a standing room crush like the northern line at rush Hour. And so, to my dismay, I am now completing my journey by road which is what happens when transport fails.

People complaining about their train journeys are really annoying. So anyway, join me as what should be a couple of hours back from Chester becomes a five hour hoik through wales, into the West Midlands down to Reading and then to Paddington. Cos the London line is shut at MK. And yes I’m whining.

Been invited onto a YouTube food game show, part of a channel which gets 25 million views a month, backed by major US Network. No fee but good for ‘exposure’. Ha ha ha. Also format sounds truly dreadful. Will review if/when it sees light of day, featuring every wet-lipped influencer going.

For various reasons which drive me nuts, sounds (and podcast platforms) only have one series of TKC available to listen to at a time, during its run and for a few weeks after. That period has ended. We are on a break right now so there aren't any. We return late in October.

This is an extraordinary thing for the editor in chief of publishers Bloomsbury to say. But it does also explain why they published a book by Johan Hari which defamed me (claimed I'd used ozempic; I hadn't and wouldn't) and then had to apologise publicly to me and insert an errata.
