13. Europeans shouldn't feel guilty about using electricity for airconditioning (or reversible heatpumps), it already mostly comes from the sun, especially if you pre-cool. This is good news for hot countries as well. Heat is deadly.

John is being entertainingly and accurately irate about glowing descriptions of net metering. (He's right, the future of electricity pricing is all about WHEN your electricity is used or generated. In sunny hours it is, increasingly, not worth anything on the market.)

Not to dunk on this but it isn't really true that the Hormuz oil crisis is driving a solar boom. Here's this chart updated to June of China solar exports, showing that the March spike in exports has subsided and was therefore mostly just export tax rebate effects.
Chart from BloombergNEF and SinoImex showing monthly dollar-value exports of solar cells and modules from China, by market, from November 2024 to June 2026. They spiked to $4.5bn in March 2026 because a key China export tax rebate was removed, fell to $3.1bn in April - still high but possibly due to some spillover effects and deadline missing - and then are back to a normal-ish level of $2.2bn in May and $2.5bn in June.

Cycling after dark is part of everyday life here, but it still raises real concerns. This week I look at what helps people feel safe on those night-time rides – from lighting to travelling together. New post and video.

Cycling safely after dark
We have entered the darker months again, and that inevitably makes cycling a little more precarious. Safety after sunset has two sides: being visible to others and feeling socially safe. As cyclists we cannot lock ourselves in, as one might in a car, so the environment matters all the more. Being visible is straightforward. A working front and rear light, together with the legally required reflectors, is usually enough.

But note that the decline from 2017 was not so much about a switch to EVs starting then (that really kicked off in 2021). It was a decline in total sales of cars in China. There was a significant slowdown.

The claim that the Israeli government is ethnically cleansing the West Bank is somehow inaccurate or inflammatory is utterly insane. Settlers routinely engage in murder and arson to get Palestinians to leave where they’ve living. That’s the textbook definition of ethnic cleansing.

I really like running the airconditioning on solar power.
A screenshot of the Solaredge app showing solar power production and household energy consumption for the poster's house. Total electricity production over the day was 59.11 kWh, total consumption 21.38 kWh. By 15-minute intervals this doesn't perfectly match, but there is a long plateau of 1.5kW consumption between about 11am and 18:00 representing air conditioning load. The airconditioning is turned off before the solar production drops.
