People mistake ‘authentic’ for ‘default’. If I have to make an effort to show up in a way that serves my authentic purpose, that’s more true to myself than if I went with my default and undermined what I’m trying to achieve. And with practice I’ve learned to manage my people-energy and boundaries.

Totally! My accent was more generic council estate South London, but I definitely picked up bits of it, because bits of it were fucking cool! Or at least we thought so at the time 😆

I’ve read about “multicultural London English” like it’s a new phenomenon, but I’ve been hearing it since at least the late 1980s. It was more to do with social class than race, but nobody was faking it, kids got their accent and dialect the same way they always have, from the people around them.

Yeah, we can be sorry that she died, but let's also celebrate that she lived, and how she lived. And nobody worth a damn has a bad thing to say about her, just as it should be.

Maybe one way we can honor Dolly Parton's memory is by following her advice: "Find out who you are and do it on purpose."

It’s in how the question is worded. I’m entirely ambivalent about where they live or what they’re doing. I also don’t want to be completely ignorant of something in the news so I’ll read to find out the bare bones. And I’m interested in *how* they’re discusssed, because it says something about us.

When you’ve got hard, complex problems to solve, you probably need to talk to each other more, not less. Meetings are only a waste of time if they’re bad meetings or if you don’t need to be there.

I’m sort of curious enough that I might have a dig another time. But it’s Friday, my brain is fried both from a week at work and this weather, and Claude couldn’t find me the answer, so it’ll have to wait 😆

That *shouldn’t* be the case - the cell tower sends it to any phone within range that’s capable of receiving it and doesn’t have the setting switched off. But sometimes stuff doesn’t work like it’s supposed to 🤷‍♀️

It’s a fair point. I don’t know what the maximum time-to-live is on those messages for phones picking up a UK signal after it went out. I did a bit of light googling and the expiry is set per message, in theory it can be “until cancelled” but whether that’s true in practice I don’t know.

Loads of people saying they accidentally dismissed the alert so didn’t get to read it. In case you ever need it, and if you’re somewhere you have data, recent alerts should always be at www.gov.uk/alerts.

Sorry, I mean for UK registered mobiles not in UK it shouldn’t. For overseas registered mobiles in the UK I expect it would as long as the feature is enabled. But possibly if the phone is from a country it’s not enabled for, it wouldn’t?

It uses proximity to a cell tower to know where you are, even for a national message as far as I know, so it shouldn’t

Also ended up writing to a girl in Idaho called Susan, about my age, who used a PO box because her parents were strict mormons and would read her post. Once she was caught with a borrowed tape of The Devil’s Music (Duran Duran) and grounded to her room, so probably best they didn’t read my letters.

Every car rental line ever By instagram user @mattsurelee
A humorous infographic titled “Every Rental Car Line Ever” showing a collection of colored dots representing different types of people and workers in a chaotic rental car office, with a small boxed area on the left containing blue and yellow dots depicting workers either milling around or frantically searching for cars while an orange dot represents a guy being tricked by insurance questions and a cluster of pink dots below symbolizes an exhausted family discovering they are renting a truck, while on the right side a scattered line of brown, green, purple, and red dots represents confused customers such as people in the wrong line, those with no urgency, a woman without a driver’s license, someone who needs to be downtown in negative fifteen minutes, and at the far right a striped multicolored dot represents people wondering why the process takes so long, with each dot explained by a legend at the bottom.

This is good news, and it matters beyond the ponds themselves. It's a reminder that, as others have said, the horrifying rollback of trans rights in the UK over the last year and change has happened wholly without a democratic mandate. When the people get a say, they demand inclusion.
Article header reading "Hampstead Heath ponds to remain trans-inclusive after public back existing rules." It goes on to say "Policy agreement means trans people will continue to have access to Kenwood Ladies' and Highgate Men's ponds in north-west London". Then there's a picture of someone diving into water, below which it says "A public consultation found 86% of the 38,000 respondents favoured retaining the ponds' existing trans-inclusive arrangements.
