"The social conditions proposed by the companies profiting from AI are beyond Orwell’s bleakest thoughts: constant surveillance; mass behavior modification via social media; [...] art and culture as individually tube-fed corporate consumption rather than communal connection."

New ruling confirms what we’ve been saying: Ticketmaster publicly says resale is the problem, while privately encouraging price gouging so they can profit from it. The solution: ☑️Break Up Ticketmaster ☑️Cap Resale ☑️Create strong rules of the road that apply to all companies!

This is one crucially important piece of the puzzle. Our choices as consumers about how we spend money, time, and our limited attention resources on journalism and art matter. At the same time, the fight against this merger isn't over, and the movement building work continues as well.

Shocking even to us: new research finds that nearly half of Live Nation's amphitheaters are actually municipally owned; LNE is operating, often with sweetheart deals. That means state and local government is subsidizing the illegal monopoly.

The Met also deserves credit for its transparent ticketing, which displays total price, face price, and fees from the beginning of the transaction without additional clicks. Both Ticketmaster and Stubhub fail to do this, despite it being required by law in NY state.

Harry Styles' tour announcement helpfully draws attention to the fact that artists only set the face price of tickets, and have no control over the fees. Both Ticketmaster and Stubhub oppose artists' efforts to make sure every fan gets to see how much they're paying in fees.

If for example, someone agrees with Open AI, Suno, Anthropic, and Trump and disagrees with every single labor union representing creative workers about whether AI training is fair use, they maybe should not be positioned as a labor advocate bravely standing up to AI companies.

It's a strong bill that would give musicians a seat at the table. Crucially, it goes beyond rates to also address questions of service design and policy--meaning artists would have a say over issues like payola, AI on streaming, etc.
