Congratulations to @jongreen.bsky.social, @sdmccabe.com, @shugars.bsky.social, Hanyu Chwe, Luke Horgan, Shuyang Cao, and David Lazer, winners of the Walter Lippmann Best Published Article Award for "Curation Bubbles," published in the APSR. buff.ly/580BrtS
APSR abstract for "Curation Bubbles," by Jon Green, Stefan McCabe, Sarah Shugars, Hanyu Chwe, Luke Horgan, Shuyang Cao, and David Lazer, The authors argue networked curation on social media creates partisan "curation bubbles" at the story level, showing that source-level partisan measures can mischaracterize how partisan individual stories actually are. Full abstract is available in linked article.

I'm sure there will be plenty of discourse about this funny little episode but in all seriousness there's a Take out there for a responsible centrist worried about ~civility~ to write on how bad it is for a senator to *double down* on this very specific, very wrong detail in their conspiracy theory

this was a hell of a video to post a week after a little round of mini-discourse about whether the campaign had been captured by DC consultants who don't really understand Jackson or Maine

seeing a lot of discussion about this and like: the reason the poster did a screenshot with no link is that if you actually search for the article you'd learn that this bill 1) has nothing to do with Zohran Mamdani 2) was introduced in committee back in May and didn't go anywhere

my hunch would be that people selling testosterone are advertising to republicans/on conservative media (part of the mechanism, not a competing mechanism)

[listens to the first verse of Cleveland] ok this is bad but it’s not as bad as her *other* song about Travis Kelce [listens to the bridge] nope it’s worse

we almost had to pull the car over just now because my wife started playing Cleveland and we were already laughing about how bad it is and then it got to the truly cringe bridge and the toddler started saying “ALL DONE! ALL DONE!” and we just lost it

seems intuitive to me that a committee ranking top 100 anything based on purely subjective tastes in multiple dimensions could produce a ranking weirder and less defensible than any individual would produce on their own

I'm not falling for that quote from a New York Times focus group participant. that's clearly someone with a fetish for not following politics as closely as I do. I refuse to participate in that kind of normal behavior

both parties think this (that they are incompetent and divided while the other side is disciplined and united), but also, a starting point for good messaging is not constantly going on tv to talk about how bad your message is

it’s very small n so hard to say for sure but in theory the longer you’re out of power the better the fundamentals but also the stronger the electability pressures (real or imagined)

for my use case I needed to add a couple of frills (take the weighted average of response probs instead of the single likeliest response) but it matched agreement with human coders that I’d been using a lightweight gemini model for previously

I've got an ideological scaling task. The best (but expensive) way to do it was with pairwise comparisons. A cheaper alternative is to use the probability distribution from an open-weight model, but the results from Qwen weren't good enough to switch. Jev is, and took a ~$100 job down to $0.50.

Donald Trump’s effects on public opinion are wild. Last week he negatively polarized our country against free money. This is at least the *second* time he’s generated a rally around the flag effect in Canada this term

Instead of H-I-J-K-LMNOP. Q-R-S…, it’s H-I-J-K-L-M-N. O-P-Q-R-S-T-U… so each letter stays spaced out. you’d think something like the alphabet song would be a solved problem. This version is clearly better!

What has made the University of California exceptional is its commitment to increase access without sacrificing excellence. In recent years, California has proudly defied a national trend: On average, about 40 percent of its students are the first in their families to attend a four-year college. More than half qualify for free tuition. The percentages of underrepresented students have crept up, through a variety of initiatives. The California Dream Act gave undocumented students access to financial aid, as well as in-state tuition. Students on University of California campuses may struggle with basic math, but they are graduating at record rates.
