Saudi Arabia to execute man for being at protests and funerals when he was 15
Rights group says Youssef al-Manasif was tortured and first met his lawyer five years after arrest for non-violent crimes A young man faces imminent execution in Saudi Arabia for attending protests and funerals when he was aged 15 to 17, say human rights groups, in the latest example of the kingdom’s surging use of the death penalty for non-violent crimes. Youssef al-Manasif was arrested in 2017 and accused of crimes including joining demonstrations for religious freedom by the Shia minority and attending funerals that the Saudi authorities deem to be protests. He was convicted and sentenced to death by the specialised criminal court, a secretive tribunal set up for terrorism-related cases. Continue reading...

UK ‘an outlier in Europe’ for letting Farage and other politicians present TV shows
Analysis of countries’ broadcasting rules confirms Ofcom code is highly unusual, amid concerns about impartiality The UK has been confirmed as an outlier in Europe for allowing Nigel Farage and other serving politicians to present TV shows covering current affairs, according to an unprecedented analysis of broadcasting rules. Farage is one of a series of Reform UK figures who are permitted to present shows on the rightwing network GB News. AI in your oven? Anthropic warns models ‘months away’ from self-replication on smart devices
Researchers say ‘AI worms’ could soon infiltrate internet-connected devices amid calls for increased guardrails Anthropic is warning that some of its artificial intelligence models could soon become “self-replicating” and find ways to infiltrate internet-connected devices, such as smart fridges and automatic vacuum cleaners. Once this happens, the company said, the models could power themselves within these devices without the need of datacenters. Such self-replication would represent a major loss of control of a runaway AI model. Continue reading...
