Good bike trip to Llantony Priory and over the Gospel Pass today 🚵 Definitely felt more autumnal 🍁

Looking forward to seeing the "Strawbrick eco 1:1 demonstrator" at IBA27 in Stuttgart. #strawbuiling #strawhouse Half the construction industry wants to get climate neutral with straw, whether as an aggregate, bioenergy or as biochar. What if everything were simply made from straw?

Had a good time at the Structural Timber conference in Birmingham yesterday, plenty of good talks and buzz around our Ecological stand. Didn't get any silverware at the evening awards for the @ecococon.bsky.social straw wall system but it's the taking part that counts right?

Just updated energy demand figures for our electric & heatpumpified passivhaus home. Cooling demand crept up during the summer heatwaves, but is still relatively low compared with hot water generation demand. And zero energy bills thanks to a combination of PV system and battery storage.

Graph showing weekly energy demand for hot water generation and air to air mini split unit for space cooling or heating, over a period of 12 months. Hot water generation demand much bigger overall.

There's a better way, we rapidly need to wean ourselves off fossil fuels - electrify/ heatpumpify homes - reinforce mandatory targets for EVs - encourage more sustainable travel: public transport, bike infrastructure, ebikes

The best time to heatpumpify your house and stop being held hostage by the volatile fossil fuel market was before the start of the Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The second best time is now.

Were we not dependent on hydrocarbons, Putin’s regime could never have arisen, and this war could never have started. In that better world, there would be no gas stations, and there would also be no drones coming down from the sky.

Securing the straw and timber carbon storage behind the PV panels, so that no additional façade material and minimal external energy is required. This building is so impressive that green building certifiers will have to rethink their approach.

Terrible policy when domestic transport is the biggest contributor to greenhouse gases in the UK. We need to be going all-in on helping people AWAY from reliance on fossil fuels, not subsidising their use even more than we already do.
