LBC on in my EV this morning to visit my son. Hearing presenter & callers going on about the need to 'unlock the UK's energy' (they mean drilling more North Sea oil + gas). 1st; it's not 'our' oil. 2nd; it's tiny. 3rd; why do so many bank on energy sources that increasingly bring us financial pain?

Since the Hormuz crisis, EU gas prices are up 132% and oil 52%. Electricity is up 44%, after falling through spring. Every boiler, car and furnace that switches to electricity is less exposed to the energy crisis. Electrification is increasingly energy security.

Half a million trees sounds like a lot but a few years ago I planted 7,500 trees on 6 acres. So 500,000 trees would result in 1 x 400 acre wood at that density. Planted as whips (bare rooted) the failure rate can be high, so don't expect 500k mature trees in 100 years time.

I believe that a lot of the anger in the US population is rooted in these two charts. How and where this anger is channelled to determines the future of the nation. Different groups offer different solutions, different paths. What solution will win out in the long-run is still undecided.

I mean you would have to truly believe that at some point they will turn this around, but I can't see it. With local models and Chinese competition, they would have to charge thousands a month to eat into those losses. I think Cory Doctorow is right , this is a bubble fit to burst.

I don't love dunking on folks but it's so fucking funny to me that Trump was convicted of 34 felonies 2 years ago, faced no punishment, and went on to win the presidency a second time and journalists are still like, "hmm, I have an inkling that maybe he believes he's above the law for some reason."

Having recently moved to Scotland, I am struck by how many towns have road names referencing curling ponds. It is a clear sign of how our climate has changed because it’s rarely cold enough now for a pond to freeze over sufficiently to safely walk on.

Jet fuel: 12,000 Wh/kg. Modern batteries: ~300 Wh/kg. Even with motor efficiency, jet fuel holds 20x the power per kg. Worse: planes rely on getting lighter as they burn fuel. Electric planes spend energy hauling dead battery weight all the way to landing. It's a physics wall.
