San Francisco has mandatory inclusionary zoning. It also has a housing market that has priced out 2/3 of the city’s Black population and most of its working class over the past 40 years. We should stop pursuing well meaning policies that have the opposite of their intended effects.

To put it another way, you can’t just tell your sons they need to take accountability—you need to hold them accountable. Start with small stuff. Don’t shield them for the consequences of their actions. Walk them through the process of doing the wrong thing and turning it into the right thing.

Does focusing more on academic achievement lead to more academic achievement? Maybe. But it may also make school less enjoyable and less interesting, which may in turn lead to lower levels of attendance, more misbehavior, and deeper disengagement. And that would undermine academic achievement. 5/n
