We did the Norman MacCaig poem "Visiting Hour" which got weird because MacCaig actually died while we were studying it 😬. There was definitely some Shakespeare (R&J for Standard Grade, MacBeth for Higher I think, didn't much like them but enjoyed Measure 4 Measure & Tempest which we did later).

A vicious cycle of four steps surrounding a black cat with a thousand-yard stare and a dapper little tie. The four endlessly cycling steps read:

-going forward we're gonna need more of your data to make sure it's you

-ahaha youre not gonna believe this but we had a bit of a data breach

-your data is probably for sale online now

-that means someone could easily impersonate you

There are, in my view, 25 things everyone needs to understand in light of recent events: 1) Those out in our communities last night were not protestors, but organised far right extremists. 2) Their actions align with fascist ideologies. 3) So yes: these are fascist practices on our streets. 🧵

I really am scunnered with the excuses being made for Reform voters. Societal problems are complex with no easy solutions. Voters are adults responsible for their own knowledge and understanding. Why do some insist that we have to ‘gentle parent’ other people through their big racist feelings?

Sure, the most influential accounts on X are all right-wing influencers who spew a steady stream of misinformation and hatred, but I'm sure you're not feeling any downstream effects from all of that. You're just too smart and savvy to be influenced by propaganda, not like literally everyone else.

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.

HIROTUGU AKAIKE

(Received Oct. 15, 1977; revised Apr. 24, 1978)

Summary

By using a simple example a minimax type optimality of the minimum AIC procedure for the selection of models is demonstrated.

1. Introduction

Akaike [1] introduced an information criterion which is by definition

AIC = (-2) log (maximum likelihood) + 2(number of parameters)

as an estimate of minus twice the expected log likelihood of the model whose parameters are determined by the method of maximum likelihood.

#Poem
A GENUINELY CONCERNED PERSON

It took awhile but I soon found the perfect spot.
I started with the tinder - dry leaves, pine needles, birch bark.
I gathered up some twigs and criss-crossed them on top.
Then came the logs, a nice dry mix of beech, ash and oak.
Just for fun, I added some paraffin, to guarantee ignition.
Finally I left matches, a lighter and a blow torch.
Then I walked away.

Imagine my surprise when the forest burnt down.
I did try to warn people.
I said all it needed was a spark.
