What Badenoch said: ‘If he’s not calling an election, why is he talking about things happening in 2030?’ What Badenoch meant: ‘I’m incapable of thinking beyond today’s hot topic on X’

I've been a member of the lobby for well over a decade. Not a single one of my lobby colleagues has said a word about the Conservatives banning me from their conferences, without any explanation. Contrast with the US where even Fox News stood in solidarity when Trump banned news outlets he disliked

Kemi Badenoch's Conservatives Block Byline Times From Conference After Condemning Reform for Journalist Ban
The ban comes just weeks after the Conservative leader called Reform's barring of critical journalists from their conference an "authoritarian" attack on the free press

So true. In my experience, few in England (including my own otherwise highly political friends) have any interest in the dynamics of the Union. An independence declaration from Piddington attracts more interest than a meeting of three first ministers with a shared determination to leave the UK.

The rush to speculate that asylum seekers are responsible for every crime in the news is a sort of opportunistic informational terrorism. Until it’s disproved it stokes fear and hatred. When it is disproved there are no adverse consequences and they know that they only have to be lucky once.

An ex-PM, an ex-AG and an ex-Justice Secretary have spent today undermining the police on social media and siding with a blackshirted fascist and a woman who called for people to be burned alive in their beds. They all strike me as candidates for referral to Prevent. Just another normal day eh?

If you asked AI to capture in a sentence the essence of the modern right, it couldn’t better this. 👇 ‘The reopening of the scheme is likely to attract criticism from the right, especially as women and girls and people with disabilities are the most likely to be dependent on the welfare state’.

My local "TG Jones" closes today. Might seem unimportant, but besides the OAPs lining up for the Mail & Express, it was the only place to buy The Wire, Electronic Sound, Jacobin, whatever. So one more portal into a a different world - and reading - collapses, and back to the net's moronic inferno.

I have a feeling that the reason some people are getting quite as exercised as they are about the boats is because they want to be able to say it’s ok to kill strangers and to be given a pat on the back for feeling that way.

Trump regime has killed at least 234 people by bombing boats in the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean since last September. Remember: no judge or jury has found these boats were trafficking drugs. We're simply taking Trump's word for it. This is a danger to us all.

How I feel right now about the British/ 🇬🇧English( whatever) political landscape is that some one wrapped in a Union Jack could whack me over the head with a flag pole & the BBC would shove a microphone in my face asking why I provoked the attacker & the Home Sec would invite the attacker for tea .

The major problem with this reporting - beyond its fundamental inaccuracy - is that when arrests are eventually made there will be no proper context and therefore it will seem like the state is smothering free expression.

Today a bunch of fascists in the Channel risked multiple lives, and were possibly guilty of attempted murder, in addition to massively wasting the time and resources of UKBF and RNLi. It must be all over the BBC online headlines. Isn’t it?

I still don’t think calling fascists what they are would be electorally damaging to a government. But if you let things go too far, the time might come when it would be. Once that’s in their calculations, democracy is already as good as dead.

I’ve worn a grubby RNLI cap for decades. I sound London, but I was born in Truro and I was a basically feral (Gen X) kid wandering the coast path with a dog until sunset for a lot of my early life. The lifeboats are in the fabric like trawlers and farms and pasties and fish and chips.

‘Since 2 September 2025, the US has killed at least 230 unidentified people in 69 boat strikes in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific, some hit multiple times, even after being shipwrecked’. This is a compelling article about what the breakdown of international maritime law would mean for us all.

A really key point. Where EU-Can is going to land is very unclear, but what's *driving* the discussion is entirely clear. Meanwhile, in the UK, there seems no sense of urgency & to the extent there is any discussion it's stuck in 2016 - which in geo-pol/econ terms is a different era.
