Just had my flu jab at Tesco and it was shockingly quick, painless and otherwise not an issue. Consider this your annual reminder to book a flu jab 💉 Many companies will pay for it, either directly by issuing vouchers or through health insurance like Bupa.

This one raises a fascinating philosophical question: if you list your flat for £200k more than it is worth, have you really listed it, or are you just posting pictures of your home's interior online?
Georgia Dean and her husband recently took their property off the market.

He bought the two-bedroom flat in Haggerston, east London, for £470,000 in 2014. But the mortgage rate was due to rise from 1.6 per cent to 4.8 per cent: renting the flat out no longer made financial sense.

They listed it in June for £650,000, a below-inflation increase. An estate agent told them “no one would sniff around if the price stayed above £600,000”, said Dean, who works in product at a tech start-up.

In the two months before the couple pulled the listing, it attracted only two viewings.

Free international delivery here, on the off chance Graham's appraisal convinces you to give it a go: blackwells.co.uk/bookshop/pro...
Just finished Tom Cox book ‘Everything Will Swallow You’.

I thought I might tell you why I loved it so much and how it’s the most enjoyable book I have read for some time. But I don’t really know how to describe something that feels so profound whilst simultaneously being so light and hilarious.
As someone who used to spend hours sorting through second hand record shops and appreciates how the presence of animals opens something in us that is impossible to replicate any other way, I’ll just recommend you read it.
I noticed the Booker list yesterday and scanned through thinking it inevitable I’d find this title. I didn’t. More fool them. It’s timely, deeply affecting, full of delightful characters, and absolutely brilliant. What a triumph. I know what everyone is getting for Christmas.

Incidentally, this is the reason I hate writing grants - a good application takes as much effort as writing a paper, success chances are as low as publishing in a top journal. If my paper gets rejected, I take it elsewhere - if my grant gets rejected, it is pretty much dead

In 2023, @nature.com published 'Papers and patents are becoming less disruptive over time', receiving world-wide media attention. Our Matters Arising, published after a 32 month delay (more on that soon), shows that the reported decline can largely be attributed to dataset artefacts. 🧵
The average CD_5 index per year for Web of Science. The original Park et al. decline (top curve) becomes essentially flat (bottom curve) when removing papers with CD_5=1. Those papers largely correspond to dataset artefacts.

Like this from @timharford.ft.com on how inclusive design principles can often help all users, not those just seen as traditionally excluded www.ft.com/content/4d8e...
Subtitles help people who can't hear what the actors are saying - and it turns out that, for some gritty dramas, that is all of us. Web pages that are designed with screen readers for the blind in mind are typically better structured, simpler and friendlier for mobile devices. The Oxo kitchen appliance company was founded by a retired cookware entrepreneur whose wife had arthritis, but the chunky rubber handles are far more widely enjoyed. And of course, the dropped kerb may be life-changing for wheelchair users but it is pretty convenient for anyone pushing a pram.
The challenges faced by users who are unusually small, large, old or young, or who have disabilities, are, writes Epstein, "more extreme versions of the challenges that
many other users face"

What a great article not only on faculty workloads, but how little our salaries actually factor in to most university budgets. A few highlights. First, our salaries are falling:
Third, faculty salaries are falling even if we statistically control for faculty rank and institution. By our analysis of National Center for Education Statistics data, tenured and tenure-track salaries are down 10 percent in real terms since 2016 and are lower today than they were in 2002; nontenured faculty salaries are down 4 percent since 2016 and are at 2002 levels today.

To put this plainly: Suppose sharply increased teaching loads enabled institutions to cut one out of every seven full-time faculty. (That’s roughly what we saw last year in severe cuts announced at West Virginia, Western Illinois, and St. Cloud State Universities.) The associated savings in salary and benefits even through such drastic action would amount to less than 2.5 percent of total institutional expenditures for the typical university.

The upshot? If you think higher education has a cost problem, squeezing more teaching out of faculty is not the first place you should look.
