That's the point--and, frankly, I think the more most students are exposed to what is truly unique about the academy, the more they love it. A university is one of the only places where people can play with ideas without needing to expect any sort of commercializability.

Having an insight in a philosophy seminar, or understanding a literary character in a way that opens up new understandings of the people and things around you, or being exposed to a new idea in the social sciences that allows you to make better sense of your shared world--these are exhilarating!

This 33-year-old nurse told the FBI she knew she was “going to set him free” after border patrol agents brought in a man whose face was bloodied and seriously injured. She treated him and helped him escape, and she faces charges now. He got away, and they never relocated him.

Never sell anyone out. In fact, if you're asked about banning 12-year-olds from softball, just say, "You're asking me to sell out kids for my political career. I'm not going to do that. Let's stop demonizing people in tougher circumstances than you or I will ever experience. They have guts."

The fact that Bluey isn’t anywhere on this list throws the entire thing into question. I’m 100% serious. In this go go go attention economy, Bluey brings heart and life lessons to kids and adults alike while making them slow down (and giggle a bit as a treat).

At dinner during the on-campus visit for my current job, one of the department members asked if I was married. The (then) department chair practically leapt across the table and shouted, “Don’t answer that!” The other two faculty the piped up, “You can’t ask that!” “That’s an illegal question!”

I kinda get why people hate on fussy philosophical stuff, but on the other hand don't you think we live in a time where it'd be especially helpful to have rigorous conversations about things like personhood, meaning in life, the point of art, the point of pure mathematics, & operationalizing ethics?

Disability support policy is a giant test of the principle “Innocent Until Proven Guilty”. Systems that gatekeep disability benefits to prevent supposed grifting are betraying that principle by deciding it’s worth making many innocents struggle & starve to stop a few bad actors. Same with welfare.
