Unquotepostably, Duck mentioned in the piano thread the phenomenon of "all-Steinway schools." Sometime soon I will write about how much this deal sucks for basically everyone except the Steinway company itself, even though the schools that sign up for it (understandably) act like it's really special

Had to laugh at this from my undergrad alumni magazine because Callery pears are famously the worst, shittiest urban trees and should all be replaced with good trees. It’s like saying “We rescued this West Nile mosquito from the wreckage of 9/11 and have lovingly kept it alive to this very day 😍”

Maybe clarinetists will kill me but it is interesting that historically there are documented clarinetists who used vibrato in late 19th early 20th century (around the same time string and vocal vibrato started to widen and increase) but then it became “jazz”-coded and not allowed in Classical music

If you're curious about this class, it's a sophomore-level 7-week course and we cheat enormously by smuggling in all of schema theory even though most (not all) galant schemas were not specifically named in 18th-century sources (even though they were clearly present & cognized in musical practice)

When I was a grad student, a bunch of frat bros marched through campus shouting unambiguously pro-rape slogans. In a sane world the entire Greek system at Yale would have been permanently shut down the next day (not to mention all the marchers expelled). Needless to say absolutely nothing happened

Talking about why Rahm Emanuel is a bad candidate on the merits and actually going into his record is giving way too much credit to Rahm Emanuel. When your 5 year old says he's going to drive a car to Saturn you don't explain why cars can't achieve space travel. You say "cool, sounds fun!"

Yesterday I got told "Hey thanks Dr. Brody, you're a goat" by a student. If it had been "you're THE goat" then I would have understood it as the acronym GOAT (hardly warranted given the incredibly minor favor he was thanking me for), but "you're A goat" can surely only refer to the farm animal? 🤔

I listened to this audiobook myself earlier this year, all 37 hours of it. It's extraordinary, of course, one of the finest nonfiction books I've ever read ("read," whatever). The quality of the research and the prose is matched only by the unbelievable incompetence of the audiobook performance.

Apparently it's harder than you'd think to find a material that maintains the human

I agree with this as far as it goes, but the real scandal of the situation described in NHJ's piece was the degree of inequality that can exist within a single city's public school system. NYC's is one such city, Louisville's (my city) is another.
