Over the last decade, there were two hypotheses: H1: the political right genuinely cared about threats to speech from the left. H2: they were using campus speech wars to impose their values and silence dissent. Today, the answer is clear, but I can't find any of the H1 people admitting their error.

I spend the first half doing a basic introduction to syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. In the second half we just work through a handful of interesting papers on various topics—I pick based on what the students are interested in, what I’m thinking about or want to think about.

What central admin also declines to calculate is the labor cost of these needless activities. Would it be better for a professor to spend hours trying to book her own travel and process reimbursements, or write a grant, or do a study?

One suggestion: waiting <.> on a store entrance should have you re-enter, rather than needing to move off and then back onto the entrance.

That's the point--and, frankly, I think the more most students are exposed to what is truly unique about the academy, the more they love it. A university is one of the only places where people can play with ideas without needing to expect any sort of commercializability.

Having an insight in a philosophy seminar, or understanding a literary character in a way that opens up new understandings of the people and things around you, or being exposed to a new idea in the social sciences that allows you to make better sense of your shared world--these are exhilarating!

This 33-year-old nurse told the FBI she knew she was “going to set him free” after border patrol agents brought in a man whose face was bloodied and seriously injured. She treated him and helped him escape, and she faces charges now. He got away, and they never relocated him.
