I wrote to Senator McCormick's staff regarding his recent op-ed in the Washington Post. 1/6
I read with interest Senator McCormick’s op-ed in the Washington Post “I’m a Republican senator. America needs more science, not less.” (https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2026/09/23/sen-dave-mccormick-nih-research-needs-more-reform-investment/ ). He made some important points, but the piece also included some factual errors and misrepresentations that you should be aware of.

Let me start with some background about myself. I was appointed Director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), one of the 27 institutes and centers at NIH by Secretary (and former Republican Governor) Tommy Thompson in 2003, during the first administration of George W. Bush. I served through 2011. In 2011, I moved to the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine as Associate Senior Vice Chancellor for Science Strategy and Planning in the Health Sciences and a professor of Computational and Systems Biology. I am writing this in my personal capacity.

lol holy shit, good on Will. He's been relentless in boosting Gaza fundraisers to this day.

Muhmmed Project𓂆 🇵🇸
@ProjectMuhmmed

My dear brother William
@willmenaker

Today, we did not send you an ordinary message of gratitude. Instead, we decided to write our gratitude on the walls of Gaza itself.

The young members of Project Mohammed painted your portrait on one of the walls still standing amid the destruction, because your voice has never been merely distant words to us. Here, your voice has become water for thirsty children, bread for hungry families, and meals for people exhausted by hunger.

The war may have destroyed the buildings around us, but it could never erase the gratitude in our hearts. We wanted your portrait to remain here, among the people you stood beside during the most difficult days of their lives.

When the children saw the mural, we told them: “This is William—a man who may be far away, but whose heart is very close to Gaza. His voice helped bring you water and bread.”

This is not simply a portrait on a shattered wall. It is a message from Gaza to you:

You did not witness our suffering and remain silent.
You helped the world see and hear us.
Because of you, our team has been able to give thousands of families a measure of hope and life.
