Canada is refusing to issue ISBNs to books primarily generated with AI. This illustrates both the urgency of the problem of the growing flood of slop books, and also the toothlessness of addressing it on the honor system without there also being consequences for lying
Use of artificial intelligence
By registering with ISBN Canada, you declare that your book was created by a human author. You may use AI tools only for limited support tasks, such as brainstorming ideas, checking grammar, or formatting your book. You must not use AI to generate the text, create the artwork, or translate the book. ISBN Canada does not issue ISBNs for works whose content is primarily generated by AI. LAC is currently reviewing its policy regarding the use of AI content creation and our guidance is subject to change.

I know of one university—in France—that uses mostly open source (Moodle instead of Canvas/Blackboard, LibreOffice instead of MS/Google, etc.). Do we have any colleges or universities in the US who are similarly principled? (And are they hiring remote from NY?)

Whether or not these are really decompiled Adobe suite apps, I gotta say -- they are small, fast, and appear to work great. Even on Linux. Rust, man. I should learn it.

Holy shit. Someone has decompiled the Adobe suite, rebuilt it in Rust and released it as open source. Either all software is dead or the US copyright laws are about to receive an update. getartcraft.com/apps

Bertrand Russell, one of the mathematicians associated with the crisis of foundations in mathematics in the early 20th century. He tried to co-write a book defining all math and logic from first principles, until Gödel fucked it up for everybody.

Let’s stop pretending there are intellectually stimulating jobs. There’s only one job and it’s emails.

You're just not going to get the average chatty geeps big enthusiast to *care at all* that the act of, say, writing a personal email or doing their own research on a thing is good for the mind and the soul. They just want it done to a reasonable facsimile of quality as easily as possible.

Problem with the (correct) metaphors against AI that are like "I could go to the gym and just hit the showers instead of exercising and be done in 1/10the the time" is that for many people the mental work they are offloading to language models is not something they think is worth doing themselves.

Eva Marie Saint, Oscar Winner for ‘On the Waterfront,’ Is Dead at 102
A luminous beauty with dramatic depth, she brought a layered intensity to harrowing roles and seduced Cary Grant in the romantic thriller “North by Northwest.”

A while ago I ran a workshop / pep talk on LaTeX specifically for humanist scholars in which, amongst other things, I really talked up how lovely LaTeX's output is. I ... don't think the workshop went particularly well. Humanities people are pretty Word-centric. :/

"why would I ever need a task to be done faster" come on, guys. Because we're dying. Because we are literally all dying all the time. Because we're running out of time. The fact that it's often hard to measure or stupidly measured doesn't mean "saving time" isn't an important thing to human beings

QC election: the governing party won 0 seats. First Conservatives elected since 1935. PQ wins minority government but Liberals might have the popular vote. Maximum chaos. Best of luck to anyone trying to draw orderly conclusions from this; that’s not what we do here.
