LA is HOT. But does it have to be this hot? Did you know shade from a single tree can drop temps by 20° or more? Yet working-class neighborhoods like South LA, East LA, and the Valley get the least tree coverage and bear the brunt of extreme heat. Let's finally cool things down for everyone.

A great blue heron flies low over a pond at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado.

In this horizontal color photograph, a great blue heron is silhouetted in three-quarter left profile in the center of the frame, its left wing dipping into the water as it flies just above the pond’s surface. The background is the pond, with hints of the silhouetted shoreline visible in the upper-left and upper-right corners. The water reflects the golden-orange hues of the rising sun, while symmetrical ripples radiating across the surface help define the heron’s reflection and the movement of the scene.

A beautiful bird-in-flight photograph of a great blue heron relying on the wetland habitat so vital to its survival.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Very interesting bit. I want to note something important. Thank you to @fiftyplusone.news for this in the newsletter today. Note how honest and principled poll respondents are and therefore how resistant to sneaky manipulation of language in a poll. Great illustration I’ll explain.
• A polling experiment from Echelon Insights (Sept. 17 - 21, 2026) tested how voters responded to different language around data centers. Half of respondents were asked if they supported a data center in their community, and the other half were asked if they supported a "server farm." With the data center language, voters were opposed by a margin of 40 percentage points, 65 to 25. But with the server farm language, opposition shrank to a margin of 22 percentage points, 50 to 28. Remember how that guy said: it’s all about creating a permission structure for cuts? He didn’t mean “get it past you, the public”, he meant “convince Labour MPs to vote for it”.
EXCL: Ministers are working up sweeping plans for welfare changes including scrapping key disability benefit for under-25s & replacing it with multibillion pound package of support to get into work.
Whitehall sources said changes under debate were much bigger than previously thought, as Andy Burnham's government hopes to persuade more people on benefits back into work.
But the move could be fraught with political danger after last year's dramatic welfare rebellion by Labour MPs. Ministers have spent | weeks trying to persuade them the plans are about reform not cuts & feel confident opposition has waned.

Sometimes I miss important nuances of new policies, in the political mayhem. Here is one such. When I heard Andy Burnham say the triple lock would not be reformed until 2030, l assumed it would be a battle for the next general election campaign. But in fact the government has committed to legislate for the change in this parliament (see attached Downing Street statement). That will cause an almighty parliamentary row, which the UK's creditors will be watching - but should counteract the charge that Burnham has no fiscal backbone, because in theory the cost savings will be guaranteed long before the huge costs of his social care ambitions are being incurred
The current Triple Lock will be maintained throughout this Parliament, increasing the State Pension by over £2,000. From April 2030, the adjusted Triple Lock will mean the State Pension continues to rise by 2.5% or inflation - whichever is higher - and by even more if that is required to maintain its value relative to earnings. This will ensure the living standards of pensioners keep up with the rest of the population. For example, if the value of the State Pension is around a third
