A decade ago, a “weird” kitten was found on a road near a Bolivian forest. Too small to be a housecat, he had a scrunched-up face, short round ears, long whiskers, & a coat of leopard-like spots. Hypothetical model showing how progressive oxygenation during leaf development interplays with leaf morphology, cell expansion, and fate acquisition. Initial and leaf proximal hypoxia promotes ERFVII stability, regulating cell expansion and cell division. Distal-to-proximal oxygenation destabilizes ERFVII via the PCO branch of the N-degron pathway mediating cellular differentiation and expansion. Constitutive hypoxia signaling or blunting of hypoxic responses interferes with leaf development as shown on the right.
