This article is fascinating, (if true) I’m honestly surprised it was published. Admitting you’re low on missile defense in the NYT is a choice. There is nothing preventing 🇮🇷 from “going first” so to speak. The assumption is that 🇺🇸 acts and 🇮🇷 reacts is unquestioned. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/25/u...

Trump Holds Off on Major War Escalation Against Iran as Advisers Raise Concerns (Gift Article)
Among the worries is that expanded hostilities could dangerously drain the diminished stockpile of air defense munitions in the Middle East.

I mean using military force to impose your political terms is the exact definition of war. You can't have a ceasefire while also using military force to impose your will on an adversary. I can feel my brain bleeding

The important thing to understand about all of this is that all of the Third Reich's actions were undertaken *because* of their antisemitism. It was the core of their worldview. Their other genocidal projects existed *because* if their imagined war with an eternal Judeo-Bolshevik conspiracy. /1

voters, man...
One might expect that the pervasive unemployment and economic
hardship of the Depression would have made unemployed workers more
receptive to critiques of capitalism. Indeed, strikes and labor unrest reached a peak in the mid- 1930s that is still unmatched. Yet Norman Thomas, the Socialist Party candidate for president in 1932 and 1936, did not attract many votes. Most voters took to the Democratic Party rather than to the Socialists, electing Roosevelt in 1932 to replace Herbert Hoover and then reelecting him over Republican Alf Landon in a landslide in 1936. Among the men studied by Komarovsky, only about one- sixth showed any movement toward the left. Despite living through a massive failure of the American economy, some of the men blamed themselves for their predicament:

“I would like you to put it down in black and white,” said Mr. Adams, “that
I alone am to blame for my present state. The system is alright. It’s me. I had
plenty of opportunities to have a decent life among my own class of people.
It was drink that ruined me.”

Mr. Adams was critical of Roosevelt, whom he viewed as ruining the
country by getting it into debt. Another man said, “Depression is just a
handy phrase in the mouths of a lot of people who like to lay back and
make the world give them a living.” After one man denounced capitalism,
the interviewer asked him who he would vote for in the next election. He
replied:

It may seem funny to you after what I have said, but I’ll vote Republican.
You see, the Republicans are the moneyed people. They have got all the
money, but now they hide it away. I think that if we put them back they will start the factories going. We will at least have a steady job.

Oh, I forgot to add, even if you impose a hard blockade on Iran's coasts, they can bring in key weapons and components via land borders with Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, via the Caspian Sea, etc. Can they run all their trade that way? No. Import the chips for shaheds? Yeah, probably.

So apparently the ceasefire deal includes Iran continuing to charge tolls (split with Oman) on transit through the Strait, as reported by the NYT, AP and others. If that's true, I have a hard time seeing this as anything other than a capitulation by Trump. Just abject surrender.

Threatening the destruction of "a whole civilization" is just explicitly a threat of genocide. Even if it is just a bargaining tactic, even if it is just bluster, it is a threat of genocide. Everyone who has furthered, and continues to further, the aims of this regime is morally culpable.

"But we've blown up so much stuff, how can you say we're losing?" Victory and defeat in war are judged by strategic outcomes, not by how much stuff exploded. The Iran now controls the strait; we haven't collapsed the regime, removed their HEU or stopped drone/missile strikes.

But behind the scenes, Israeli officials have conveyed a more targeted message.

In private calls to local leaders across southern Lebanon, Israeli military officials have assured several Christian and Druse communities that they could remain in the evacuation zone. They have pressed them, however, to force out any Lebanese from neighboring Shiite Muslim communities who have sought refuge among them as Israeli bombardment flatten Shiite towns, according to local Christian, Druse and Shiite leaders who spoke to The New York Times. The Shiites make up the majority of southern Lebanon.

It’s interesting, we’ve been fairly lucky regarding the (relatively) small # of KIA’s so far, but the article mentions using a-10s and helos to clear the strait, which brings up the question of IRI Manpads. The war is already unpopular, and if Iran can take some larger bites out of us…

But that's very literally looking at a plan which requires Nazis to not butcher their way through disfavored ethnic groups - it is a plan that could only have worked if Hitler had not been a Nazi and if he hadn't been a Nazi he wouldn't have started the war in the first place.
