Astronomy news for spooky season: a zombie planet orbiting a dead (but still hostile) star. Evidence suggests the following: Star dies, expels outer layers, becomes white dwarf. Gas giant forms from the debris. White dwarf is now blasting planet with radiation, shearing off some of its atmosphere.

At the risk of being pilloried, kids with suspected primary ciliary dyskinesia will get respiratory epithelial biopsies that are examined, unstained, with plain light microscopy. This looks very much how I imagine those would appear if fluouresced (and not beating like crazy)

In 2023, @nature.com published 'Papers and patents are becoming less disruptive over time', receiving world-wide media attention. Our Matters Arising, published after a 32 month delay (more on that soon), shows that the reported decline can largely be attributed to dataset artefacts. 🧵
The average CD_5 index per year for Web of Science. The original Park et al. decline (top curve) becomes essentially flat (bottom curve) when removing papers with CD_5=1. Those papers largely correspond to dataset artefacts.

This is the Snow cholera data on a modern satellite image. I was just having a play around with ggmap().
A satellite image of London corresponding to the area of map in John Snow's report on the cholera outbreak linked to the Broad Street pump. A plot of the number of cases in each household has been superimposed together with the location of all the water pumps nearby.

Today’s poem is called ‘An Invention of Collective Nouns’.
An Invention of Collective Nouns

A reckoning of spreadsheets.
A distraction of smartphones.
A prattle of podcasts.
A mispronunciation of scones.

A clique of photographers.
A heard of precedents.
An enjambment of
poets. A grope of presidents.

A pile of haemorrhoids.
A bunion of personal trainers.
A bout of estimations.
A condescension of mansplainers.

A stroke of geniuses.
A spot of adolescents.
An embarrassment of Richards.
A collection correction of pedants.

Today’s poem is called ‘Word Crunching’.
Word Crunching

I
wrote
a poem
on a page
but then each line grew
to the word sum of the previous two
until I began to worry about all these words coming with such frequency
because as you can see, it can be easy to run out of space when a poem gets all Fibonacci sequency
