Omg. Omg omg omg. Emily Wilson (as in, the famed translator of Homer) just published her take on Nolan's Odyssey in @lrb.co.uk... and it is SWEET, JUICY HATERADE: www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...
As they say at the awards shows, I was humbled to learn that Nolan has read at least the first line of my translation of The Odyssey into iambic pentameter. In at least one interview, he cited my version of the first line of the poem: ‘Tell me about a complicated man.’ But I would be ashamed to have written any part of this script

A rainbow is a portion of a circle centered on the point directly opposite the sun. This circle always has an angular radius of 42 degrees: that's how raindrops work. A full moon is directly opposite the sun. So if the moon is in a rainbow, it's close to 42° degrees away from being full. (2/2)
Refraction and reflection in a raindrop, producing a rainbow. White light separates into different colours (wavelengths) on entering the raindrop, as red light is refracted by a lesser angle than blue light. It reflects against the back of the raindrop and gets refracted again as it leave the front. On leaving the raindrop, the red rays have turned through a smaller angle than the blue rays, producing a rainbow. However, all the reflected light comes out at angle of roughly 42 degrees from the line at which it came in. From https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rainbow1.svg

Don't believe your eyes. You're not looking at an actual hummingbird: this is a MOTH, Macroglossum stellatarum. The resemblance is so uncanny that their common name is "hummingbird hawkmoth". Like its avian counterpart, M. stellatarum can hover, emitting a humming sound, to feed on nectar.

Alt: A hummingbird hawkmoth in slow motion video. It's a light brown with oddly triangular wings beating at incredible speeds. The body is rounded almost exactly like a bird's, not looking like a moth very much at all. It hovers near a dark blue compound flower, with a long black probiscis extended into the bell-shaped flower.

I think about this Beauvoir quote a lot
“I think with sadness of all the books I’ve read, all the places I’ve seen, all the knowledge I’ve amassed and that will be no more. All the music, all the paintings, all the culture, so many places: and suddenly nothing. They made no honey, those things, they can provide no one with any nourishment. At the most, if my books are still read, the reader will think: There wasn’t much she didn’t see! But that unique sum of things, the experience that I lived, with all its order and randomness – the Opera of Peking, the arena of Huelva, the candomblé in Bahía, the dunes of El-Oued, Wabansia Avenue, the dawns in Provence, Tiryns, Castro talking to five hundred thousand Cubans, a sulphur sky over a sea of clouds, the purple holly, the white nights of Leningrad, the bells of the Liberation, an orange moon over the Piraeus, a red sun rising over the desert, Torcello, Rome, all the things I’ve talked about, others I have left unspoken – there is no place where it will all live again.”

this is fucking unreal stuff from Noah Wyle on the magic of The Pitt. www.gq.com/story/noah-w...
“It’s a couple of things that work beautifully in concert. First: no music. Audiences are so sophisticated, but what they’re not accustomed to is not being told how to feel,” Wyle says. “You take all that out and it forces a level of engagement where you’re now looking for clues within the frame of the screen, which forces you to look up from your phone. And I think that is extremely engaging, especially to young viewers who aren’t accustomed to being asked to participate in a nonpassive way in the viewing experience.“Second point, shooting it with almost exclusively 50-millimeter or 65-millimeter lenses, which is the most comparable to the human eye—and only shooting from the point of view of a human being that’s present in this space. There are no cameras on gurney wheels going in the hallway. There’s no cameras on the ceiling looking down from a God point of view. You are limited to the perspective of a participant. You can look away, but you can’t leave, and it becomes an endurance test for you to stay on your feet as long as we’re on our feet. Which [brings me to my] third point: real time. Real time has an aggregate sense of tension that you don’t get in any other form of storytelling. What happened before is happening now, and these two things are going to add up to the next thing. And if we throw more ingredients into this cooker and keep ratcheting it up, it’s going to pop.”Wyle makes eye contact for his next point, delivering it with a Robby-esque matter-of-factness. “Fourth point: The election went the other way,” he says with a shrug. “We could have been a really good show with a lot of nice things to say in a perfectly normal Kamala Harris universe. And instead we became almost a beacon of hope and humanity in an alternative universe. But in the midst of that, fifth point—this is essentially competence porn. You’re watching really smart, dedicated people do what only they know how to do at a level that you don’t know how to do it, and you’re so fucking glad that they’re there doing it, and compartmentalizing their own stuff to put your broken pieces back together. You’re so reassured by knowing that there are people out there that laugh and joke and have the ability to lock in like that.”

In preclinical models, treatment repaired brain pathology, restored cognitive function, and normalized Alzheimer’s biomarkers (in HUMAN models as well). • case.edu/news/new-stu... The study has been published in Cell. YES, it is PEER-REVIEWED. • www.cell.com/cell-reports... 🧪🧵⬇️
Highlights
•Severity of Alzheimer's disease (AD) correlates with
NAD+ homeostasis dysregulation
•Preserving brain NAD+ homeostasis prevents AD in mice
• Restoring brain NAD+ homeostasis reverses advanced
AD in mice
• Multiomics across human and mouse AD brain identifies nodes for human AD reversal
Summary
Alzheimer's has long been considered irreversible, but new research challenges that assumption. Scientists discovered that severe drops in the brain's energy supply help drive the disease-and restoring that balance can reverse damage, even in advanced cases.
In mouse models, treatment repaired brain pathology, restored cognitive function, and normalized Alzheimer's biomarkers. The results offer fresh hope that recovery may be possible.Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is traditionally considered irreversible. Here, however, we provide proof of principle for therapeutic reversibility of advanced AD. In advanced disease amyloid-driven 5xFAD mice, treatment with P7C3-A20, which restores nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) homeostasis, reverses tau phosphorylation, blood-brain barrier deterioration, oxidative stress, DNA damage, and neuroinflammation and enhances hippocampal neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity, resulting in full cognitive recovery and reduction of plasma levels of the clinical AD biomarker p-tau217.
P7C3-A20 also reverses advanced disease in tau-driven
PS19 mice and protects human brain microvascular endothelial cells from oxidative stress. In humans and mice, pathology severity correlates with disruption of brain NAD+ homeostasis, and the brains of nondemented people with Alzheimer's neuropathology exhibit gene expression patterns suggestive of preserved NAD+ homeostasis. Forty-six proteins aberrantly expressed in advanced 5xFAD mouse brain and normalized by P7C3-A20 show similar alterations in human AD brain, revealing targets with potential for optimizing translation to patient care.Graphical Abstract (CREDIT: Cell Reports Medicine)
