Today's a plain rice porridge kind of day for my insides so of course I'm torturing myself by writing food scenes in Hotblood

By evening, all the pennons and banners hung from the rafters in the great hall instead of the temple yard. The Frayne heron looked from the high beam above the dais. The feast turned the air thick with bodies and perfume, woodsmoke, and the rich, fatty scent of roasting meat. Servants hurried through the press with wine in blown-glass flagons and silvered platters bearing the finest dishes Frayne Hall’s two head cooks could contrive. Edwin had hired both of them not only because they were counted among the best in Highmarch, but because they hated one another passionately. Every feast was birthed from their seething efforts to outdo each other. Skewers of crisp roasted larks and pearl onions from the fertile valleys below Frayne Hall, followed by delicate pasties filled with venison from the kingswood and studded with dried figs from Suthermarch and sharp-scented spices from the Nakhanate. Bowls went round with strips of orange peel and almonds from the Southlands that had been blanched, then fried to the color of old oak, both thickly lacquered in sugar shipped in from the Amber Islands.
Castor took small, measured bites, washing each mouthful down with spiced wine. He watched their guests exclaim over the wonders being sent out from the kitchen, observing how his father waged his campaigns even here. Every platter reminded them that House Frayne’s purse reached past its own passes to distant coasts the king himself touched only through Edwin’s goodwill and alliance.

Supper at the inn turned out to be crumbly brown bread and leftover lamb stew, ladled over a mash of turnips and buttery yellow potatoes. The meat was a little tough after being cooked twice over, but still very good. It was served alongside a bowl of creamy white broad beans cooked with herbs, swimming in a vibrant broth of onions and wolfpeaches, which only Lina didn’t touch, in spite of her hunger. She didn’t trust wolfpeaches. Their leaves looked too much like belladonna. Even though Castor and Aldric had dined on them many times in their respective travels, and Baldwyn assured her there were many books detailing all the reasons they were safe to eat, she felt stubbornly certain that any one of those round, red fruits bore the possibility of poison. But everyone partook of the sweet dish that was brought to them after the stew had been cleared away: a gleaming pile of damsons and cherries roasted with honey, then cooled and served with whipped cream streaked gold with saffron.
The innkeeper’s daughter, a plump, pretty girl with dark hair, set it down with a shy curtsey, right in between Aldric and Castor. She stayed to refill their cups with cold ale, her eyes lingering on the lines of their necks. When Castor noticed he gave her his usual courteous smile, but Aldric just spooned the two biggest damsons onto Lina’s trencher, followed by a golden dollop of cream.
“I’ve never tasted such spices at an inn before,” Baldwyn said contentedly, around a mouthful of lamb.
“Lord Robart lifted the sumptuaries last winter. His tradesmen are permitted to use them as we might, back in Hærten,” said Castor. His voice remained mild, but his eyes narrowed slightly as he said it. As far as he knew, the king had not given any of his vassals formal leave to be this permissive with their smallfolk. He might have to reconsider the approach he’d planned for their reception at Hosterhold.
