Accidentally stumbled within 10 yards of a black bear yesterday during my survey. Thankfully it didn't see me. No harm, no foul. Although I learned something about myself: zero sense of self preservation. I didn't even consider preparing my bear spray. I just got out my phone. This is how I die. 🦊

I totally missed this bit of news. A sea turtle nested on the US West Coast, which has never happened before because of its usual cold currents. It was an Olive Ridley nesting in southern California, probably as a result of both climate change and the warmer currents associated with El Niño. 🐍🌎

The apparition that is welcome to haunt fall: Virginia creeper 🌱 #nativeplants ? Feels like a "neonative" to the western U.S. similar to Alaskan mule deer or PNW barred owls. It's native to the continent & we've facilitated its spread, but it's not like...cheatgrass. Sometimes a problem.

Palmately compound Virginia creeper leaves begin to turn red along with the bright red stems and deep purple berries of the fruit clusters.

I love that tissue culture has allowed Philodendron spiritus-sancti, which is extinct in the wild, to go from being worth as much as a car during the pandemic to being cheap enough for me to leave in the front yard. It loves growing outside during the summer. 🌱🪴

Hot take: vacation rentals collapsing isn't an emergency. Penultimate orchid skeet from last week's club meeting: the slippers! This stunning group of Paphiopedilum and Phragmipedium orchids use complex flower shapes to trap insects and force them to crawl past their anthers. It's like a corn maze for bugs where they come out carrying pollinia! 🌱 🪴

Check out this last white orchid I liked from the club meeting: Habenaria medusa Aptly named with the flyaway filaments on the lip, a stunning and alien flower form. This genus is commonly called the rein orchids, and is composed of terrestrial species found globally, usually in wet habitat. 🌱🪴

I squoze some unexpected fish in a trout stream yesterday. speckled dace (top) redside shiner (bottom) Also caught trout, but like...you have seen a lot of those here. Native non-game fish are also really cool!🐟

First up for your orchid #bloomscrolling pleasure- the Oncidiums. These FAMOUSLY fragrant orchids are delicate and gorgeous, like a swarm of tiny hovering butterflies. The parent of many popular hybrids is the pink one on the bottom - O. sotoanum. Its lotiony smell is highly heritable. 🌱🪴
