Sir IVA Richards - 109 N/O for Glamorgan vs Derbyshire at Ynysangharad Park, Pontypridd in 1992. Hugh Morris was on 30ish when he came in and Viv got to his 100 first. Dom Cork got smashed everywhere. Then it rained. The Masterblaster.

I saw Gordon Greenidge bat five or six times and he hit a ton on all but one occasion. The missing knock was when he hit a double ton.

The best was probably Sobers, during that summer of 1966, but I've disqualified him for being too good at everything, so it's Viv instead. But my favourite was Aravinda de Silva, who oozed sheer class.

Gordon Greenidge - my favourite to watch Best innings I played against - Steve O’Shaughnessy got a faultless ton against us.

I've seen Viv, Tendulkar, Lara, Kallis, Smith etc, but maybe Lara because he was so ruthless and looked so hard to get out once he was in. Gower and Mark Waugh made batting look easy.

Graham Thorpe. Scoring a hundred in a Sunday league match at the Oval for Surrey against Yorkshire. He got his century with a boundary from the last ball of the innings. Best I played against was an international rugby player. Ireland’s Mike Gibson. He got 80+ not out. Batting with a broken jaw!

Was trying to avoid the trap of recency bias and also/alas the only two Joe Root innings I saw live were not good in any sense of the word, but it might be he's the best batter I have seen live, just not when I was there.

Best innings I saw in the flesh, was a pretty much faultless double hundred by Daryll Cullinan at Chester-Le-Street versus Durham. Every shot in anger missed a fielder.

Collis King. Terrified bowlers, didn't take a guard, would often hit his first ball for 6 and liked his rum.

My 6-year-old. The way he hit my finest medium pace table tennis balls down the corridor with his mini bat...so scary! (Especially because I could never hit a single one of the damn table tennis balls he chucked my way - they're tiny!) 2nd place: Steve Waugh at SCG on Jan 3rd 2003. 😁

I did see Sachin Tendulkar score 150 at Fenners against a Cambridge University Team. Of which over a century was with boundaries.

Seen a lot luckily. Boycott was a far better player than many realise, but I loved watching Sangakkara most. At times looked like he had more time than anyone else. Made things look effortless.

Ben Stokes at Cape Town; unforgettable. Jonny Bairstow's century in the same innings was emotional. Hashim Amla's double century almost completely forgotten in what inevitably burned out into a drawn match.

Kp taking the Australian attack apart at Bristol in 2005 was pretty special - but Ian Botham (well past his prime) winning a Benson and hedges game for Worcestershire at Bristol single handed was incredible to a 13 year me - 138 not out, hooked a six to win the game in the last over

Saw Brian Lara dismissed fairly cheaply by Ed Giddins at Hove. Couldn't decide if I was delighted as a Sussex supporter, or gutted not to have seen more of Lara's genius.

Today’s Googly. Who is this? A 50-over world cup winner, I'm the leading run scorer for my country in that format. I scored a 100 in my 100th test. I have played for Yorkshire, and in the ICL not the IPL.

Would agree with this, especially before Australia became too dominant (even then they drew some great performances fom others). Also, Sri Lanka emerging and Zimbabwe briefly threatening to. Shame England weren't better but they still had some great matches and series.

I think there's also a short period of the 90s where the top end of Test cricket was as competitive (rather than dominated by a team) as it has been in a long time.

90s - the end of the Windies era, beginning of the Australian era - the re-entry of South Africa - plenty of test cricket in the calendar because no T20 - many all-time greats began their careers in the 90s

Admittedly, the 90s coincided with my teenage years and we always think stuff was best when we were that age, but the bowling tandems in that decade were something else. Wasim/Waqar, Curtly/Courtney, Donald/Pollock, Warne/McGrath.

They say the Golden Age of Cricket was the late Victorian / Edwardian period, when cricket really was the top sport in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 and W.G. Grace had a Beatle-like fame. Whether that includes test cricket is more debatable, of course, because 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, 🇦🇺 and 🇿🇦 were then the only test-playing nations.

1970s...the decade of the fast bowler..from the targetted aggression of the aussies to the majestic rise of the west indies. A decade of broken ribs and purple bruises for the brave english batters.
