Good to see the Rugby Union back in the local paper (the Sentinel) following a summer break. Great start for Sandbach.

Congratulations to Zoe Stratford and her husband Luke. She was great to talk to when I met her recently for a Cheshire Life magazine feature. With Zoe and Luke both at Sale, is the new arrival a baby shark 😜 www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-...

Self indulgent fans messaging England women's rugby players to say they are disappointed because they couldn't get a selfie - the world has gone mad. Many of these women are out on the pitch chatting to supporters long after the game is over.

Marvellous news: Tom Curry signs a new Sale Sharks contract. I had the wrong idea that he may decide to follow the Euro to France following the World Cup.

When Burnham speaks he doesn't go in hard on the other party leaders. He simply says we got it wrong and we need to do something about it. Whatever your view on the various parties, it's a good thing. We should probably all try to do the same.

Initially made me laugh but it's outrageous that someone takes the top job of Director of Rugby and won't do media duties. It isn't as if Rugby Union doesn't need the coverage. He must now post weekly wine reviews!

What a brilliant speech from Burnham. Electoral reform, support for care workers, scrapping VAT on electricity, council house building, and more. He is proving to be someone who I can get fully behind unlike any recent Labour leaders.

Out now in October's Cheshire Life magazine. My piece on Michelle Orange and interviews with a group of Sale Sharks women players including Red Roses World Cup winning captain Zoe Stratford. Match days at Heywood Rd are 'joyous'.

I'm watching the N Ireland game. A question: Do any Catholics in the north of Ireland support them or is it a sectarian split?

We wouldn't have football titles decided in the courts if we went back to the days when Man City were owned by a shop owner in Wilmslow selling records and things to play them on. Who loses? The fans.

Two things today: Tories want to stop benefit claimants buying beer and fags. X full of right wingers protesting an idea that drinking beer may return in football stadia. I thought these people were against the nanny state telling us all what to do?

Could you have beer drinking and none beer drinking parts of a ground? Currently, you can buy the same seat at Ashton Gate for Bristol Bears and Bristol City, you'll be able to drink beer one week and be banned the next. Hardly any difference in average matchday crowds.

According to the Daily Mirror, Stoke City tried to buy Alan Ball for £110,000 just after England won the World Cup. That would be around £2,659,965 in 2026. What a remarkable signing it would have been. We got the bad manager version many years later.

Nice to hear a bit of nostalgia on @bbc5live.bsky.social on Saturday sports finals. As a young reporter working in a town with a strong (at the time) RU club, I did 9 pars for the Manchester Evening News Pink on Saturdays. 3 sentences after 20 minutes, 3 not long after half time & 3 at the end 1of2

Henry Pollock now on £400,000 from club plus £150,000 from country. Add in any advertising stuff he does and we're probably around £700,000. Not bad for a 21-year-old.

Just found this crumpled newspaper page from 1995. The only time I wrote a Stoke City report. I was the newspaper's politics reporter but clambered off the subs bench as SCFC reporter Ian Bayley was sick & I was going to the match anyway. Obviously, Stoke lost.

Sept 19, 1986. Who remembers this awful rail crash at Colwich, near Stafford? I was a Sentinel (Staffordshire) reporter, the first to get to the crash site. There were scores of people lying on the grass waiting for treatment. It was a miracle only one person died.
