'View from the Window.' (c1950) Margaret Green was a painter of narrative landscapes and figure compositions of subtle strength and quiet lives; she remained largely unknown to a wider public - a story familiar to many women artists of her generation.

Last of the forgotten line.
An overgrown railway line taking a smooth curve out of sight. It is framed by trees, and the line itself is finally free of the undergrowth, running as clear as a newspaper headline, before once again succumbing to a gobbledegook of bracken.

'You had Ian Botham in an advert for Shredded Wheat and on posters for Hamlet.' Bloody hell, did you? I thought and clicked the link. I had quite forgotten the actual substance of those posters. Still, had a moment of blind panic at the idea of Beefy advertising the Bard's work.

The page proofs of the Nancy Sharp book have arrived. Naturally, we are clearing up the beach after a three-day wind, rain, and king tide event, so that's a full day of work. I am going to try to be patient and not look until tomorrow. Not rushing reactions is wise at this stage.

From the introduction to the Hookland Tourist Board I=SEE STRANGE HOOKLAND book:
REMEMBER:

Don’t go out by yourself at night. Many things in this book are thought to be imaginary, but being out by yourself in the dark can still be dangerous – even if you don’t encounter the Danebury Grim.

If you see something that scares you, tell a parent or a trusted adult such as a teacher. In extreme cases where you can’t find an adult you can trust, you could even tell a police officer.

Don’t provoke Faeries of any type. You would not like people shouting your name, poking you in your bed with a stick or throwing stones in your bath, so don’t do it to Faeries. No-one likes ill-behaved children, least of all the Elves of Hookland.

Don’t signal for UFOs with torches. It is not only a waste of batteries, it can be misinterpreted by the emergency services. Besides, we can’t promise that all UFOs are friendly or interpret your signal as a positive message.

Show some respect for the graves of the dead. If you were buried in the ground you wouldn’t appreciate another child dancing on your grave or trying to dig it up would you?

Remember to take extra care when looking for things around water – both by the sea and along rivers and pools. Even if he is imaginary, the King-Under-the-Sea should be shown some deference and Stay Belows not encouraged to grab at you when dangling your legs or trailing your hands in cool, apparently calm water.

Imaginary things can’t hurt you unless you believe in them with all your heart and then they are really quite dangerous.

New! Out in October!

Dark Reading Matter : The Last Thursday Next novel
by Jasper Fforde

The final novel in the highly acclaimed and beloved Thursday Next series. Will Thursday find her happy ending?

Swindon-based Literary Detective Thursday Next is embarking on her eighth and final adventure: 'Dark Reading Matter' and she is well aware of the fact. The problem is, others are too.

Old foes and new are plotting a terrible revenge: To disrupt the narrative and make Dark Reading Matter not just unreadable but unpublishable. Thursday can't let that happen and needs to use all her guile and narrative trickery to unmask the antagonists and guide the series to a satisfactory conclusion.

It won't be easy. The Martians have broken out of their HG Wells novel and threaten both the real world and the Bookworld.

Agents from a higher reality want unfettered access to the Dark Reading Matter, the realm where deleted books and unrealised literary ideas end up. A Gateway to Hell has opened up at Wantage's Shakesmania, the nation's second to worst Shakespeare theme park and the cosy world of Enid Blyton has been hi-jacked by Ultra Right Wing Nationalists. With Reality Field Distortion experiments going haywire, a partially redacted donkey, a Bookworld on the brink of losing its imaginative energy to Big Tech and a murderous stamp collector with Philaticide on their mind, Thursday has to navigate a tightrope of borderline unusable narrative devices to bring the series to a satisfactory conclusion.

It's a tall order, but Thursday has a secret weapon: Her own adaptability, her husband Landen, a host of stalwart friends and ultimately the most loyal compatriots she can call upon: Her readers.

“Life in the Shower” - a fun little series I started a while back and just updated! When you’re in your own shower…
A very simple cartoon of someone standing in their shower, staring into the middle distance, perhaps wondering why they somehow yet again forgot to buy more shampoo, despite having been to the shops twice today for various other things. Of course, going to the shops a third time, AFTER your shower to buy shower things is entirely unhinged, so it’s going to have to wait till tomorrow, and who knows if they’ll remember any of this by then.
