I’m increasingly interested in moving away from video content and things like this are a huge reason why. These platforms cannot be trusted, and self hosting remains prohibitively expensive for video.

To reiterate: I believe great work is being done here, it's just next to impossible to find because society disregards the genre critically. In the absence of outside observers and analysis, fandom reigns.

The reason Romance has become reviled is that it lacks a critical apparatus. Shakespeare wrote Romance. The Brontes. Austen. Graham Greene. There are people just as good working today, I'm sure, but the industry is fully fandom-captured, and, like all fandoms, theirs is stupid and conservative.

centrists only talk about this stuff to troll Democratic proposals, it's the explicit frame of the Atlantic piece. it's like back during Black Lives Matter when a white guy would get shot by the cops and Republicans would pretend to care for a few minutes

in reality Democrats are the only US party interested in child benefits. conservatives and centrists hate the welfare state, they think the working class must be forced to work by the threat of destitution. so every policy must have a work requirement, which is impossible for stay at home parents

you could do it like a classic European socdem-Christian Dem compromise, we get free daycare, you get stay at home parent subsidy. if Republicans wanted to offer that bargain to, say, President AOC I guarantee she'd accept it in a heartbeat

Norway has solution to this actually, stay at home parents can get their share of the public daycare subsidy as cash, that way parents are not pushed one way or the other. the problem of course is virtually no one on the center or right actually gives a shit about parents

Why it's worth not pulling the "oh it's a different district" or "awkward joke" excuses about transphobic Dems. *Any* indulgence of transphobia is too much. We want them walking on eggshells, regarding anything that might even be perceived as anti-trans — in word or deed — as political suicide.

We can, and probably should have individual incentives (e.g., suspensions) where it makes sense, but we should also think of how the platform should be designed to be discourage this behavior.

We have a bunch of high follower account types with institutional incentives and perhaps personal predilections towards performative cruelty who should absolutely know what they're doing, and then we also have a platform that enables it.

I've received several versions tonight of, "Look some posters are just like that. Don't interact if you don't want them to brigade you. They don't even really mean to brigade you, actually, they just use BlueSky in a way that inspires brigading, and they have good reasons to do that."

For the sake of discussion, lets accept that "They don't even really mean to brigade you, actually, they just use BlueSky in a way that inspires brigading." Then this is a problem with the affordances of the platform and needs to be dealt with.

For all that it's been barely reported in the UK press, it's still hard to understate the importance of the stance @labourunionsuk.bsky.social has taken on trans and non-binary rights this week. Every single trade union affiliated to the party of government has stood up and said we will not comply.
Joint statement from National TULO

Solidarity with the trans and non-binary community

Labour's 11 affiliated trade unions stand in total solidarity with the trans and non-binary community.

Trans rights are human rights, and trans rights are workers' rights.

We in the trade union movement will do all we can to stand up for our trans members and all our trans siblings, to protect them from persecution, harassment and attack.

The government must act now to protect all trans people, to make sure their rights are protected, expanded and upheld in our workplaces and communities.

What is happening is not that AI-generated cultural goods are replacing human-made cultural goods; what is happening is that capital is flowing out of the production of cultural goods *entirely,* making us all poorer for it.

But the crowding out is extremely obvious to see, in particular, in video games because just Microsoft by itself is responsible for a huge proportion of the bleeding because they're explicitly divesting from Xbox to plug the gaping financial ulcer that is OpenAI.

In both film and video games, you see a ton of *project cancellations* and a general difficulty in funding new projects, which wouldn't be the case if AI was displacing workers in producing those products—you'd expect the opposite, in fact, if it was becoming cheaper to make a movie/game.

It really doesn't make sense to attribute those job losses to AI-the-technology, because if that were the case we'd be observing AI outputs displacing conventional entertainment products, and they're clearly not. Rather, the impact of AI is that AI-the-business is crowding out other investment.
