This is part of what makes executions so morally depraved. It is a sober calculation on the part of the state to engage in extreme sanction. In Hegseth's case, he's taking it yet further still. He wants a livestream where people can bathe in blood for pleasure.

There are moments of extreme exigency where violence, of even that soul-curdling nature, is necessary to forestall a greater evil. This is the opposite. An extravagant and unnecessary indulgence in bloodshed for its own sake against a paraplegic who has already been punished.

This is a moral atrocity and it needs to be loudly condemned as such. There is a reason that democracies *don't* do publicly televised executions (and why many don't execute people at all): it inculcates and rewards bloodthirst, which corrupts the spirit and corrodes the foundation of the polity.

Nothing enrages an evil man more than the sight of people doing good. Nothing makes him more furious than the realization that deep down, we aren't all like him. That we find his thoughts abhorrent, his beliefs foul, and his soul festering and corrupt.

While I admire their optimism, I feel like folks predicting that all major software vendors turning their flagship products into vibe-coded horseshit will be the tipping point for mass corporate adoption of open source software don't have any perspective on how bad enterprise software already was.

I have noticed in various offline circles — particularly media and political science — it is still considered rather inappropriate to acknowledge that the US President is evidently quite insane. It's not that these people don't *know* it; they clearly do. You just aren't supposed to *say* it. 🙃

this is so bleak, actually imagine being called a slur for a group you don't even belong to and instead of going "wow holy shit, no one should have to put up with that, we need to hold people to account," you go "no guys it's okay I hate them too!!!" and just hand the bully your lunch money

Note: That is not, in fact, what socialism is. However, this may be one of the more revealing political moments of the past decade: a leading politician openly acknowledging efforts to redefine a political term based on contemporary political rhetoric, as opposed to its original/historic meaning.

Common Myth 5: Book bans only happen in places like Florida or Texas

Reality: Book Bans can (and are) happening everywhere. Even "blue" states like California, Illinois, or Massachusetts, still experience book bans in schools and libraries. By pretending it's only "some states," we create a ripe environment for "sof censorship," instances where certain books may be pulled from shelves without an official challenge or not purchased in the first place.

Common Myth 4: "I can still buy the book, so it's not really banned."

Reality: Even if you personally can buy a book at a bookstore or other retailer, libraries still play a fundamental role in keeping literature accessible to everyone, students and patrons alike, regardless of their financial privileges. Banning a book in a library is still a potential infringement on students' constitutional rights.

Common Myth 3. Being banned actually helps an author's sales.

Reality: Most authors do not see a bump in sales after their books are banned. In addition, many authors lose out on the opportunity to connect with readers at events like festivals or school visits, decreasing their income further. For authors who are not already bestsellers, this loos can be financially devasting.

Common Myth 2. Banned books are "legally obscene" or "pornographic,"

Reality: The vast majority of banned titles feature people of color (44%), LGBTQ+ people (39%), or trans or gender-diverse people (10%). Only 10% of challenged titles included "on the page" sexual experiences.

Common Myth 1. Book Bans are initiated by concerned parents in a school district.

Reality: In 2025, 92% of all book challenges were initiated by pressure groups, government officials, and decision makers. Less than 3% of challenges originated from individual parents.

Not mentioned here: Book bans have a chilling effect on the entire industry. If someone’s work is likely to be targeted fora ban, agents and publishers will avoid them. Just look at the precipitous decline in new queer voices in traditional publishing in the past couple years.

Most of AI (in business terms) is driven by a false belief that TECHNOLOGY is what drove the internet and telecommunications booms of the last two decades. Technology unlocked better communication and business processes. THOSE then drove the boom. Tech was a means to an end, not the end in itself.

There is a reason that AI is so attractive to fascists. It allows its users (adherents might be a better word) to hand over their decision-making, their thinking, their autonomy, to something they can convince themselves is bigger, stronger, and smarter than them.

AI tools to “detect AI” are guessing just as much as AI does when it generates things. The best resource we have is trust in our fellow humans: the journalists and writers and artists we know who still have integrity, the outlets we can still trust for facts, the researchers still doing the work.
