One of our volunteers just saw an R2 going down Gilmore Ave, and sure enough, both the R2 and R5 are being detoured down Gilmore due to traffic. We need true, all-day bus lanes on Hastings! (And everywhere else where buses get delayed.)

I live in Quebec, with strong rent control by North American standards. Does it reduce housing/rental construction? Possibly! But I *know* our zoning rules limit housing construction. I know there’s demand from developers to build more housing and we’re flat out saying “no”. So that’s my focus.

My view of rent control is that it doesn’t solve the underlying problem (housing supply shortage). But also, to the extent that it’s net negative, it’s pretty far down the list of the main causes of the housing crisis. So, I don’t spend much time advocating for or against it. Am I wrong?

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

On airports it’s probably worth a point of clarification for folks new to all this. A 🧵 1/n #cdnpoli Govt doesn’t “own” airports today. It created a series of non-profit concession corps (who can do profit making things) who run on top of land Canada owns.

Curious why compass card values/passes take so long to update. Buy a daypass for my grandpa and reload my compass in the morning, and an hour later the cards still are not ready. How is it this slow to update a stored value in 2026 lol

I went to camp with a kid who was easily a foot taller than the other kids. No matter the sport, everyone wanted him on their team and no one complained about it being unsafe or unfair for him to compete against smaller kids. The whole safety and fairness argument against trans kids in sports is BS.

Interesting video essay on the subject of "AI" (mainly LLM) usage & anxiety that was honestly kind of a challenge to digest at first. It frames it as a systemic issue where change at the individual level largely needs to come from education & harm reduction strategies rather than shaming use of AI.

The Vancouver Villages plan was defeated. This is a huge blow to housing policy in the city. This was the easiest part of the Vancouver Plan to implement; Ken Sim directed staff to prioritize it. If we can't pass this, what's the point of any of it? All housing policy work here is in limbo.

bus lanes improve accessibility! paratransit vehicles like this one move faster, which is critical as paratransit riders already face longer trip times than those who can use conventional transit. bus lanes also reliably provide a clear curb to deploy a ramp anywhere, unimpeded by street parking.
