That seems like such a key point here: someone in power understood the urgency Governments have so utterly failed to respond to this crisis. People like Nyx and Kalicum stepped in and this court ruling acknowledges both their efforts and the abdication of government

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

Tla'amin First Nation has shared this letter they were copied on from Israel Powell's descendants, to Powell River Mayor and Council. The Nation and Powell River's muni gov are collaborating on a possible name change, and this letter is a great gesture of support.
September 28, 2026

To Powell River Mayor and Council:

We are the grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of Helen Marjorie (Powell) Fisher. Helen Marjorie Fisher (HMF) was the granddaughter of Walker Powell, who was the brother of Israel Wood Powell. As you know, Israel Wood Powell was a doctor and leader, who was the first
superintendent of Indian Affairs in British Columbia. Although he had never lived or visited there, the river Powell River was named in Israel's honour, in recognition of his political influence and legacy.

Israel Wood Powell no longer has any direct descendants, and we are among his closest living relatives.

We understand that Tla’amin Nation has requested the town of Powell River change its name, out of respect for the harms done to their people by Israel Powell's policies, which included the creation of Residential Schools and banning of Indigenous cultural and spiritual practices. Specific to the region of the Tla’amin People, Powell's part in the delays of reserve allocation resulted in the loss of Tla’amin’s village site at tiskwat as it was granted to Robert Patterson Rithet.

We are supportive of changing the name of Powell River, given the above request by Tla’amin Nation, and also the lack of any historic family connection to the river and the surrounding lands.

Respectfully,

Elise Durante, great-granddaughter of Helen Marjorie Fisher

Marjorie Fisher, granddaughter of HMF

Brenda Buller Focht, granddaughter of HMF

Heather Fisher, great-granddaughter of HMF

Eric Focht, great-grandson of HMF

Meghan Buller, great-granddaughter of HMF

Leslie Campbell, great-grandson of HMF

Today on the BC Campaign trail: BC NDP leader David Eby promises to raise the speculation and vacancy tax 1% and create a new Unsold Condo Tax on finished condos left empty for more than 1 year Lots of railing against developers in that speech #bcpoli
Eby says he will increase the speculation and vacancy tax by one percentage point, from 1% to 2% for domestic speculators and from 4% to 5% for foreign speculators. The change will help put more empty units into the long-term rental market, while any additional revenue will go to building more affordable homes people need.

The BC NDP will also introduce a new Unsold Condo Tax on finished condos left empty for more than a year. Starting at 2 per cent, the tax will increase by 1 per cent for each additional year a condo remains unsold, pushing developers to sell finished homes at prices people can afford. The plan could unlock up to 5,000 condos for British Columbians.

According to a September 2026 report by Real Property Data, these unsold units are estimated to be worth $4.45 billion. Over 1,300 of these condos were finished over two years ago, with some dating back to 2019.

“People shouldn’t pay sky-high prices to rent or buy a home while developers sit on thousands of finished condos waiting for prices to go up,” said Eby. “In this election, British Columbians have a choice: a government that keeps pushing to lower home costs for working families or Conservatives who have always opposed our plan and sided with those who profit from higher prices.”

The Speculation Tax has already successfully turned 20,000 empty units into homes for British Columbians. Under David Eby and the BC NDP, starting rents in B.C. are down over 10% since the peak in 2023 – and have gone down for 26 months straight.

Eby promises to legislate Buy Canadian procurement rules for public infrastructure projects That will include the North Coast transmission line, he says. BC Hydro would be directed to use 70% Canadian steel for the line's towers in Phase 1 and 100% in Phase 2, at extra cost of $50 million #bcpoli
Eby’s new “Built in BC and Canadian” plan will apply to ministries, Crown agencies and health authorities, and require them to put B.C. and Canadian-made goods and materials to work on public projects, wherever it is viable. It means that where a BC or Canadian supplier is available to supply goods and materials at a competitive price and on time, it must be sourced domestically.

Municipalities will be encouraged to do the same and be helped to source Canadian products for local infrastructure. To demonstrate leadership, this new approach will immediately apply to the construction of the nation-building North Coast Transmission Line. BC Hydro will be directed to build 70% of Phase 1 towers and 100% of Phase 2 towers with Canadian steel.

David Eby and the BC NDP’s “Built in B.C. and Canada” plan will:

Set minimum requirements for B.C. and Canadian-made materials in public infrastructure, including wood, steel, aluminum and cement.

Apply penalties to U.S.-made goods and materials, which will count against these requirements.

Require projects to buy from B.C. or Canadian suppliers when they can deliver on budget and on time.

Support the prime minister’s Buy Canadian policy that the federal government is advancing for federal procurements and federally funded infrastructure projects.

This election, BC Greens are running on four commitments to British Columbians: A Life You Can Afford, Care You Can Count On, Economic Fairness for All, and a commitment to Fight for your Future.

Lowan also announced she would be running in Saanich North and the Islands, following Rob Botterell announcing he would not be seeking re-election.

“Serving the people of Saanich North and the Islands has been one of the greatest privileges of my life,” said Botterell. “I would not be stepping aside with such confidence if I didn’t know who was stepping up. Emily Lowan is someone this community can trust, and I will be working hard to help her win.”

“Having the chance to represent Saanich North and the Islands, the same neighbourhoods in which I grew up, is a profound honour,” said Lowan. “From a lack of access to healthcare, to the instability of a housing crisis, to underfunded ferry routes, to the threats of drought & climate disaster, the people of Saanich North and the Islands deserve someone who’s willing to fight tooth and nail for them. That’s exactly what I’ll do in the Legislature.”

Jeremy Valeriote announced that he would be seeking re-election in West Vancouver-Sea-to-Sky, where he won a historic victory in 2024, becoming the first BC Green to represent a riding on the mainland.
