Erik @hiebe.bsky.social · 06/10/2026i dont see it as an incentive/punishment or anything i just see it as a gov revenue source. avg doctor in BC makes $241k and will be paying approx $1000 more in annual income taxes, i dont see that moving the needle while the claimed $1bn additional healthcare funding from this is significant imo 110
Erik @hiebe.bsky.social · 06/10/2026i mean yeah unsurprisingly the centre left government wants to capitalize on left populism without committing to things that would give them friction w senior gov, industry insiders etc glad to see greens propose actual wealth tax, but im still not against this modest tax bracket change 100

Erik @hiebe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Yeah this is a fine change, small change to tax brackets impacting a small number of people who can afford it to generate $1b for healthcare. Too many people up in arms over this. Yes a real wealth tax / wealth inequality fix would target land, capital gains etc, this is not that. Lets do that next 110
Erik @hiebe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Yea i think thats a fair take. To me this is the type of thing that would be a reasonable change to make in one of their budgets, but weird to campaign on. Just getting too much air overall i think lol. Now a wealth tax and a stable funding model for transit would be somethin to get excited about! 130
Erik @hiebe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026They have some government revenues to make up and this is stable long-term revenue that will not affect 98% of people. I don't have a problem with this at all. That said, yes please go after capital gains, land wealth etc. there's gold in them hills 000
Erik @hiebe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I agree but I think there's too much of a kneejerk reaction to this announcement. This will impact about 2% of BC and make very little difference - e.g. if you make $250k per year this will be a change of ~$1200 per year. This is just increasing revenues from the tax base w/o impacting most people. 210
Erik @hiebe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Any serious solution needs to be with the barriers to new supply, of which rent control is a drop in the bucket. Overhaul restrictive zoning so we dont need to have years of consultation and hearings to build a little apartment on an empty single family home lot. Stop 'growth pays for growth' DCCs. 010
Erik @hiebe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I think this is a good take. Acknowledging that rent control is not the primary driver of low supply - a shortage is a shortage. You can ration with who can afford higher prices, or with waitlists and measures to avoid displacement. Either way you still dont have enough housing for everyone. 100
Reposted by ErikOh The Urbanity! @ohtheurbanity.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I live in Quebec, with strong rent control by North American standards. Does it reduce housing/rental construction? Possibly! But I *know* our zoning rules limit housing construction. I know there’s demand from developers to build more housing and we’re flat out saying “no”. So that’s my focus. 4581
Reposted by ErikOh The Urbanity! @ohtheurbanity.bsky.social · 04/10/2026My view of rent control is that it doesn’t solve the underlying problem (housing supply shortage). But also, to the extent that it’s net negative, it’s pretty far down the list of the main causes of the housing crisis. So, I don’t spend much time advocating for or against it. Am I wrong? 15883
Erik @hiebe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026The reality is that we currently live in a market economy, so cost increasing policies negatively affect creation of new housing. Easy wins in current conditions are upzoning, removing barriers to new housing, and ADD government funded nonmarket housing that the market would never deliver. 000
Erik @hiebe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I think it can be a good policy tool for protecting the people least able to move if market rates would otherwise force them to. But it cannot be considered a solution to the housing crisis, and likewise repealing it is not a silver bullet either. 110
Erik @hiebe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I generally agree with this take. I dont think rent control is a primary driver of affordability, and while removing it may measurably improve average rents, I think there are bigger fish to fry that wouldn't expose people to sudden market rate shocks. 110
