We live in a society where we’re expected to be stoic, and to not talk to strangers about our financial hardship. I remember once when I visited the dentist and he asked me why I hadn’t been in years; I said: because I couldn’t afford it. He waived the x-ray fee. Most people want to do and be good.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

When I moved to Melbourne I lived a block from Babka in Fitzroy, so I’d often go there. Its staff, who were always lovely to me, had a reputation for rudeness (people would talk about the “Babka bitches”), and I realised then: many people’s issue with service staff is that they themselves are dicks

This is a great insight from a young woman in Canberra on housing and time and multiculturalism www.abc.net.au/news/2026-09...
The woman who feels priced out of spare time

Rosie* is in her 30s and lives in Canberra. She captured the point vividly.

"Housing gets covered as deposits, rates, supply. Living it, the real cost is time. You work the hours the housing demands, in the suburb the housing pushed you to, and what gets sacrificed is the ability to sit down with the people around you.

"Multiculturalism worked in this country when people had time to spend with people unlike themselves. Not policy time — ordinary time. Backyards, front steps, sport, the shops, someone's kitchen. That's how a stranger stops being a category and becomes a neighbour.

"We have spent 30 years pricing that time out of people's lives and now we're surprised that cohesion is fraying and asking what went wrong with our values.

"When people are exhausted and stretched and never in the same room, difference stops being interesting and starts being threatening. That's not a failure of tolerance. It's a failure of time. That's what I'd want people in power to understand."

I just find it hard to comprehend the mindset of someone that would defend this. Saying this is justified — good, even — is so plainly outrageous, it should be an opinion that exists on the absolute fringe periphery of our society. As it stands, it is the default position of our leaders and media

Saw this in NW Vic yesterday. The quoll in question would be a western quoll, which was found in 70% of Australia but is now only in SW WA*. I don’t think any one sentence has brought home the devastation of colonisation for me quite like “What you know as the moon, we know as Mityan, the quoll.”
An interpretive sign from Lake Tyrell. It reads:

“To name a star

“In 2017, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) formal recognised the traditional Nooronf name for the star Unurgunite, shining some 1,120 light-years away.

“Amongst the list of 86 new star names, Unurgunite was one of four stars in the night sky recognised by their traditional Aboriginal names. Because Aboriginal culture stretches back more than 65,000 years, these four new names represented the most ancient star names on the list.

“In our star-lore...

“The story of Unurgunite is a love story.
Unurgunite is an ancestor who has two wives.
What you know as the Moon, we know as Mityan, the quoll. Mityan fell in love with one of Unurgunite's wives and tried to entice her away. When Unurgunite found out, he attacked Mityan and an enormous fight followed. Mityan (the Moon) lost and was left to roam the heavens ever after with his battle scars on his face. You can see Unurgunite in the night sky as the star previously known as Sigma Canis Majoris (the Great Dog). His wives are the two bright stars at his side, one closer to the moon than the other.”A close up of a sentence from the previous photo which reads “What you know as the Moon, we know as Mityan, the quoll.”
