the statement "10% chance that AI kills us all" taken out of
context just sounds insane, but behind it there is a large body
of rigorous research on the risks of Al technology (eg see the
latest report by METR on the OpenAI-HuggingFace incident).
Forget the 10% figure and just look at the evidence. We are at
a point where AI is powerful enough to find new cybersecurit
vulnerabilities in established IT infrastructure, and
independently decide to exploit them. "Decide" does not
mean that it is a conscious evil terminator, but simply that it i
able to follow goals and take actions outside our control and
understanding. Despite this, the world is currently racing to
make Al more and more powerful, and giving it access to key
infrastructure (eg military tech, see recent progress on
autonomous weapons ie killer robots), This is very concernin
and should be taken seriously. Regarding EA/rationaIism and
their dismissal of climate risks, I can only say that I too have
been disappointed by that, but then I started talking to peopl
in those communities and realised many of them do take
climate seriously and also don't like the lack of focus on it
that other members show
